Latest Advancements and Technology in Hair Transplant Procedures

Imagine having Hair today and tomorrow you notice a big chunk of it is gone. Oh the horror! Wouldn’t it be nice to get it back immediately? Natural hair loss is quite common and thank to latest advancements in technology that can cure hair loss, this shouldn’t worry you too much. In the last couple of years scientists and hair specialists have been working hard to understand hair loss and with this hair transplant technology has come a long way. We have moved from the days of ugly grafted clumps of hair known as plugs to hair transplant surgery that restores your hair in a matter of hours with minimal scarring.

FUE Method

From Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUT) to Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The major breakthrough in hair loss surgery began with the Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUT) introduced in the 1990s.  The FUT procedure, which is still popular today, involves removing a strip of the scalp from a donor area, normally the back of the head, and the strip is then inserted by a surgeon into the recipient’s balding area. The recovery period for FUT is about 2 weeks after which the stitches will be removed. Due to the scarring caused by FUT, surgeons came up with a less invasive hair transplant surgery procedure known as the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique. In FUE, grafts are taken out as individual follicular units instead of as a strip and then inserted on the balding area. Since grafts are taken out individually, the scarring is way less and the healing process is faster compared to FUT. There is minimal swelling and no stitches to be removed.

U-FUE Method

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to Undetectable/Unshaven Follicular Unit Extraction (U-FUE)

Recently, surgeons have figured a way to make sure that hair loss surgery is completely undetectable through the Undetectable/Unshaven Follicular Unit Extraction (U-FUE) hair transplant procedure. With FUE, the patient has to shave their head before surgery which makes it pretty obvious that a procedure has been done. With the new advancement it is now possible to perform an FUE procedure without having to shave the patient’s head prior to surgery. With U-FUE procedure, single hair follicles are extracted with the hair still at its normal length. The hair follicles are then cut and implanted on the balding area as just the root. Once done, the patient leaves the doctor’s office looking the same as they walked in, no visible evidence of surgery. U-FUE is a gentle procedure and apart from some initial redness, there is no visible swelling or pain after the procedure. Growth of the newly transplanted hair occurs slowly and naturally over 12 months.
