Whooping cough is an acute and contagious disease mainly affecting the children, due to infection of the mucous membranes lining the air passages by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The medical name of whooping cough is pertussis. Attacks of frequent, persistent, spasmodic coughing that ends in vomiting; noisy, convulsive, drawing in of the breath at the extreme of violent cough with a special inspiring sound called whoop or whooping inspiration.After an incubation period of 1-2 weeks, little catarrh, mild fever, coughing, loss of appetite, etc., gradually develop and persist for 1-2 weeks. Later, catarrhal stage is associated with symptoms similar to those of the common cold. Then cough becomes paroxysmal, followed by involuntary drawing in of the breath, which produces a special sound, called whoop. The continuous coughing fits often cause dyspnoea and a degree of cyanosis and end in vomiting. Sometimes there is bleeding from the nose and mouth.
 The stage of whooping cough may last for 2-3 weeks, and if not treated, cough may persist for many more weeks. Whooping cough is seldom serious, but child becomes susceptible to pneumonia and tuberculosis.
