To anyone who has been bitten by ticks and all those who wish to protect themselves potential bites of these critters; there is solution available in the form of homemade Natural Tick repellents. The Internet is a great source for acquiring the essential oils that will go in your tick repellents for humans. Alternatively, you can source some of these herbs from local farmer markets. The best solution, however, is to grow your own garden with herbs and plants that give out volatile essential oils to repel bugs. You can buy essential oils from medical stores or from health food stores.

Plants and herbs that repel bugs, ticks, fleas and rodents

If you are an avid gardener, plant the following herbs and plants in your garden to keep your yard free of ticks and other bugs:

  • Anise

Ingredients

  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 40 drops each of Melaleuca, lemongrass, Lavandin, Citronella and

Mix all of the above and store in a spray bottle. Use it to spray all over the yards to repel bugs, ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. Pine needles have been used since centuries by Native Indians who used to stuff their mattresses with them to repel bed bugs, fleas, ticks etc.

Essential oil tick repellent recipe for humans

Ingredients

  • ½ cup distilled water
  • 6-8 drops of citronella, or lemongrass or eucalyptus essential oils
  • 1 drop of Castile soap

Spray on yourself daily to repel fleas and ticks.

Natural tick killer collar for cats and dogs

A word of caution: Many essential oils are toxic to cats and kittens. Do not use any citrus, pennyroyal and pine essential oils on cats. Talk to your vet if you plan on using these essential tick repellents for cats and dogs.

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp alcohol
  • 1-2 drops each of Cedarwood , lavender, citronella, thyme essential oils
  • 4 capsules of garlic

Mix all above ingredients. Soak your pet’s collar in this blend overnight. Dry it. Once dry, place it around your pet’ neck to make an effective natural tick repellent collar.

Natural tick repellent with tea tree oil for humans

Tea tree oil is an excellent bug repellent. In this recipe, you use white vinegar and water with a few drops of tea tree essential oil. Never apply tea tree essential oil directly to the skin as it could cause an allergic reaction, particularly if the oil is highly concentrated. Mix the oil in some carrier oil like sweet almond oil to dilute it a bit.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil

Mix all ingredients and store in a spray bottle. Spray all over the skin. In case you do not want to use tea tree oil, you could add peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, geranium or camphor oil.

Natural tick repellent for kids

The following herbal bug repellent recipe can be safely taken along on camping trips and hikes and used for repelling ticks and other bugs. It is safe enough for kids’ delicate skin but always do a small patch test first to ensure there is no allergic reaction.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ tsp of essential oils (basil, cedar or citronella, juniper, lemon, pine, myrrh, rosemary, rose or geranium)
  • Few drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 1 cup grain alcohol like Vodka

Mix all ingredients. Transfer it into small bottles to carry in backpacks and purses. Feel free to experiment with these since different oils suit different body chemistries.

Citrusy essential oil tick spray for the skin, home and yard

This is a versatile recipe which can be used on the skin, windows and yards.

Ingredients

  • 9 drops each of Citronella essential oil, lemongrass or peppermint oils
  • 1 tbsp grain alcohol or Vodka
  • ¼ cup spring water

Method

  • Add all ingredients to a spray bottle.
  • Spray on skin or on windows and yards.

Homemade natural tick repellent candle

Ingredients

  • 1 cup beeswax
  • 15 drops of essential oils like Citronella
  • Braided cotton wick
  • Metal wick disc
  • Stick to set up wick
  • Container to hold candle
  • Scissors
  • Food thermometer

Method

  • Melt the wax in a double broiler. Use the thermometer to ensure that the temperature remains at 160-180 F range.
  • Once melted to half cup of liquid wax, add the essential oil
  • Thread the wick through the disc and tie off end. Pinch sides of the disc to hold the wick in place.
  • Set it in the container.
  • Pull the wick up straight and tie to the stick to hold it straight.
  • Once wax is at 120F, pour it into the container.
  • Do not top it off; leave some room at the top of the container.

 If bitten

  • If you have been bitten by ticks, you can make an Epsom compress and apply to the site of the bite. Simply mix 2 cups of Epsom salts in a cup of fresh distilled water. Soak a washcloth in the solution and dab it on the bitten region. This will take away the pain and reduce swelling. Make sure you remove attached ticks immediately.
  • Apply some white vinegar on the bite to reduce pain, swelling and chances of infection.
