Acne has been a common Skin horror for numerous people in India and abroad. The skin care industry today is thriving with countless skin products to battle acne effectively. Acne is most commonly associated with individuals at an adolescent age, teenagers and the fairer sex. However, acne has also been observed in individuals aging from 30’s to the late 40’s. Timely active acne treatment can help you avoid the risks of further skin complications. A quick look at the 6 common types of acne observed in individuals:

What is Acne?

Sebaceous glands or small oil producing glands are located in the skin surface of mammals, commonly attached to the hair follicles. These glands secrete a greasy substance called the ‘sebum’, through the follicular duct which is further surfaced to the skin. This secretion helps in enhancing the skin and regulates a healthy water percentage to the skin. The sebaceous glands are evenly dispersed through the entire human body apart from the palm and the soles. They are most prominently located along the scalp and the face. The formation of acne is a gradual process which happens due to abnormal or over secretion of sebum directed to the skin surface. Pollutants in the environment, excessive exposure to sunlight, hormonal fluctuations and excessive stress are just some of the external factors which affect your skin. Having established that, the over secretion of sebum results in shiny skin which in turn doubles up as a hospitable environment for the development of bacteria. The end result is a skin outbreak which commonly leads to the following types of acne:

  • Blackheads: Blackheads are dead or inactive skin cells that are a result oxidized melanin(determinant of skin color) and leads to a fluorescent black sappy material which prominently makes its way to the outer folds of the skin which are known as blackheads.
  • Whiteheads: The formation of whiteheads are restricted to the inner folds of the skin. Like blackheads, these follicles have a clasped opening with a very miniscule opening which restricts air contact thus repressing oxidization and causing the sebum and the dead cells to remain white along the inner surface of the skin.
  • Papules: You must have often observed people advising an individual with pimples to not burst or scratch them when they are a little blubbery. When the content of sebum and dead skin cells is excessive, an outbreak causes them to spread into the epidermis (outer surface of the skin) which is visible prominently in red and pink specks along the outer surface of the skin which are called papules. As irritating as they can be, papules must be justify untouched as any physical contact with the papules simply aggravates its growth to the surrounding parts. Papules tend to heal as quickly as they develop without any traces of scars.
  • Pustules : The maturity of papules results in pustules. These are red in color and contain a yellowish-white substance commonly known as ‘pus’. These similarly, shouldn’t be scratched or disturbed as they lead to further skin complications.
  • Nodules: Nodules are inflamed blubbery like formations which arise from complications in the follicle walls. These are formed in slightly extreme cases where the infected remains spread to the surrounding skin follicles and shape steadily. Nodules often incur a potential risk of the formation of scars on the infected area and must be tackled promptly.
  • Cysts: Cysts are a serious concern and are excruciatingly painful for the individuals who endure it. They are comparatively deeper and severe formations of acne which results in the formation of a membrane along the surface of the skin which over a period of time sucks the life of the blood cells around the skin, gradually wrecking the follicle structure.

The Cosmetic Laser Surgery Center located in Pune delivers effective acne treatment and removal procedures through a state of the art technological equipments supervised by renown and qualified professionals. In extreme cases a Laser Resurfacing treatment is performed post a detailed consulting session in accordance to the complications of the scars and acne formations. Dr. Chaudhari, (M.S. DORL.MB FICCS (Cosmetic) MACSI, MISFPS), a renowned surgeon who leads the Cosmetic Laser Surgery Center in Pune strongly believes in achieving the best results naturally. He does not limit himself to the notion of directly treating the patient with the Laser Surgery and instead resonates with the approach of using four significant modalities prior to Laser Resurfacing. These include the follows:

  • The first modality is the “punch excision and grafting”. In this case the individual scar is cut out and closed with suture, or is cut out with the graft being taken from behind the ear.
  • The second modality is called the “undermining and subscision”. Here, the thick tissue that holds the scar down is broken up with an intrinsic instrument, thereby releasing the scar and allowing it to raise up. With repeated treatments, the body then forms its own ‘collagen’ and fills in the scar from the base. With this combined approach the percentage of improvement remarkably increases.
  • The third modality for depressed scars that do not extremely extend to the depth of fat is to introduce and fill them with ‘collagen’ or ‘Fasican’ also known as ‘soft tissue augmentation’. The soft tissue filler will lift the scar more effectively if it is performed after ‘subscision’ breaks up the anchoring scar.
  • The fourth modality includes a “fat transfer”. If the acne is extremely severe, often the fat below the skin is lost during the scarring process. By transferring fat from another part of the body to the face, the supporting fat upon which the scar lies can be replaced effectively.
