What would cause a dentist and his staff to go out to the parking lot and dump ice cold water over their heads? The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, of course. Alaska Center for Dentistry just got in on the action and it’s all for a great cause.

The dentist in question is Dr. Sage of Alaska Center for Dentistry and the doctor, along with his loyal staff, recently posted an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video to the dental office’s Facebook page.

Here’s why they did it.

What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

The ALS ice Bucket Challenge is an activity that involves a person either dumping a bucket of ice water over their own head or someone else’s head.  Why on earth would anyone do such a thing? Again, it’s for a really good cause.

The challenge is designed to promote awareness and raise money for the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS for short. The disease is also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It can cause loss of movement and, in the later stages of the disease, complete paralysis.

So far, the challenge has succeeded in raising over $100 Million for the ALS Association, which is leading the fight to treat and cure the disease, which affects approximately 5,600 people per year in the U.S. alone.

The challenge first went viral on social media during the months of July through August of this year and was started by a man with ALS named Pete Frates. Since Pete first took the challenge, it has spread like wildfire on Facebook, with the likes of Bill Gates, International singing sensation Katy Perry and action star and former WWE wrestler The Rock all taking part.

Recently, Dr. Sage and his staff were nominated, so naturally they decided to get their ice buckets ready. And the camera was rolling.

Alaska Center for Dentistry Gets Drenched for a Good Cause

As the dental office’s ALS ice bucket challenge video begins, Dr. Sage and his staff can be seen standing in the parking lot of the dental office with Dr. Sage wearing his characteristic lab coat and his staff in plain clothes. Buckets of various sizes and colors can be seen sitting on the ground alongside them.

As is customary to the challenge, the group first announces that they are proud to take part in the challenge and that they are supporting those affected by the disease.

Then, also as is customary to the challenge, the doctor and his loyal staff call out their next nominations.

Not intent on just calling out a single person or group to take part in the challenge, Dr. Sage and his staff call out their sister office, Alaska Center for Dentistry Wasilla, along with Coombs Orthodontics, Tracy at Henry Schein and Arne at Burkhart Dental. Those individuals now have 24 hours to take part in the challenge.

Following their announcement, the doctor and his staff pick up their buckets and let the ice water fly.

While some people scream and otherwise freak out the moment the ice water touches their skin, the doctor and his staff took the challenge like the true professionals they are. They even high fived afterwards.

Will the folks at Coombs, Tracy at Henry Schein, Arne and the staff at Alaska Center for Dentistry Wasilla take part in the challenge? More importantly, will they keep the same calm demeanor as Dr. Sage and his staff? They now have 24 hours to show us and the rest of Facebook exactly what they’re made of.
