A List of Strictly Female Diseases

Books found at local bookstores attempt to define the psychological differences between men and women. Yet, anatomically it is clear that ovaries, breasts and the uterus distinguish women from men. Sometimes, the reproductive organs can become inflamed with infection, or its cells may grow at an exorbitant rate. Unfortunately, females are prone to all sorts of diseases.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

The Centers for Disease Control, or CDC, says that pelvic inflammatory disease is a condition in which the sexually-transmitted diseases gonorrhea or chlamydia lead to infections of the uterus or fallopian tubes. It states that more than 1 million women in the United States suffer from pelvic inflammatory disease annually.

The CDC says that symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease include lower stomach pain, fever, painful sexual intercourse and painful urination. This disease also causes abnormal vaginal bleeding and a foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

Treatment for pelvic inflammatory disease includes taking antibiotic medications to treat the bacterial infection. Sometimes, hospitalization becomes necessary when the women experience nausea, vomiting, a fever and happens to be pregnant. Sometimes, the pelvic inflammatory symptoms do not resolve with oral antibiotics, and surgery may be necessary.

Breast Cancer

MedlinePlus says that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives. Its symptoms include a firm breast lump that can be irregular in shape. Typically, this lump is not painful. Other breast cancer symptoms include an alteration in the size and shape of the breast, as well as the nipple. Sometimes, the nipples can emit a green, bloody or pus-like discharge. As breast cancer spreads to the rest of the body, bone pain, skin ulcers, weight loss and swelling of the arm that is on the same side as the affected breast can exist.

MedlinePlus says that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are options to manage breast cancer. Radiation and chemotherapy destroy the growing breast cancer cells. Surgery can involve removing the cancerous lump (lumpectomy) or removing the entire breast (mastectomy). Other breast cancer treatments include targeted therapy and hormonal therapy to stop breast cancer cell growth.

Ovarian Cancer

MedlinePlus says that ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer affecting women. Symptoms of ovarian cancer include bloating, pelvic or stomach pain, trouble eating, irregular menstrual cycles, constipation and indigestion. Ovarian cancer also causes weight gain, vaginal bleeding, back pain, appetite loss, nausea and vomiting.

Treatment for ovarian cancer involves removing the uterus (hysterectomy) or ovaries and fallopian tubes (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy). Chemotherapy ad radiation are also effective treatments for ovarian cancer.
