Sanitation

Sanitation is one component of environmental health, namely a deliberate behavior to civilize human life net to prevent direct contact with dirt and other hazardous waste materials, with the hope to maintain and improve human health.

In its application in society, including the provision of water sanitation, waste management, waste management, vector control, prevention and control of pollution of soil, food sanitation, and air pollution.

Indonesia's environmental health is still poor. Not yet optimal sanitation in Indonesia is characterized by high incidence of infectious diseases and infectious diseases in the community. At the other countries the disease pattern has shifted to degenerative diseases, Indonesia is still troubled by the case of dengue fever, diarrhea, leprosy, and hepatitis A that seemed to have no end.

The condition of sanitation in Indonesia is lagging far enough away from neighboring countries. With nearly overtaken Vietnam Indonesia alone, especially compared to Malaysia or Singapore which have a high commitment to environmental health in the country. Jakarta only ranked second from bottom after Vientianne (Laos) in achieving sanitation coverage.

Sanitation determine the success of the development paradigm of environmental health the next five years that more emphasis on prevention (preventive) rather than aspects of the treatment (curative). With the existence of a good preventive measures, the incidence of diseases linked to environmental conditions can be prevented. In addition, the budget needed for preventive also relatively more affordable than on curative efforts.

Government budget for environmental health is still relatively minimal. From the budget is still minimal, sanitation was not in the order be given top priority. The amount of investment for the development of sanitation is estimated only Rp20/orang/tahun, lower than those required of Rp40, 000/orang/tahun. Poor sanitation causes economic loss to Indonesia for 6.3 billion dollars per year in 2006, this is equivalent to 2.3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) us.

The Government is also working with several developing countries to improve sanitation facilities and clean water supply conditions, particularly in rural areas. Very sad it was when we still need other state funds to build sanitation in their own country.

Besides the government, the community also has a very important role to create a healthy environment. Currently, there are still many people that have not been aware of the importance of sanitation. One states that environmental health practitioners in remote villages are still found people who prefer to defecate (BAB) in the rice fields than building latrines to maintain the health of themselves and their surroundings.

Mind set of people like that is what needs to be changed. Sanitation is not only a duty, but a need for environmental health. We certainly do not want to be known as a country whose citizens still BAB (bowel movement) at random, as stated by Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, which target free CHAPTER at the end of 2014. "CHAPTER still haphazard, what the world said?"
