Anti Aging Effects of Curcumin

Curcumin From Turmeric

Curcumin is an anti aging and health, wonder supplement. It is a component of the Indian spice turmeric, which gives it it’s yellow color. Curcumin is extracted from turmeric and is the most active phytochemical (natural phenol) of the turmeric root or rhizome. Turmeric health has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for 4000 years and only this century has curcumin been identified as it’s most active component.

If you wish to avoid the diseases and conditions of Aging – heart disease, vascular problems, cholesterol control, joint pain, insulin resistance and diabetes, cognitive decline, cancer and many more, the benefits of tumeric / curcumin should be part of your daily anti ageing supplementation.

Curcumin Has The Following Properties:

  • antioxidant – free radical scavenger
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antitumor
  • antiarthritic
  • antiviral
  • inhibit beta-amyloid – Alzheimer’s disease
  • neurogenesis – growing brain cells
  • glutathione S-transferase – powerful detox mechanism
  • Improves depression
  • helps antibiotics be more effective
  • reduce bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol
  • reduce clotting…

With all of the above health benefits, one would think of this as a miracle supplement – maybe it is. Few human studies have provided conclusive proof yet. Many in vitro and animal studies have shown the above turmeric extract properties to be true. It seems to be an insurance policy to better health and life extension.

As far as pure Anti Aging capabilities, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin is how it works to slow the aging process (the many other health benefits are pure bonus!). Two main schools of thought on what causes aging is free radical damage to the cells (oxidation) and sustained inflammation (the body’s repair mechanism run amok).

Curcumin acts as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing free radical’s damaging effects to every cell and especially the cell’s DNA. As we age, our body’s antioxidant levels decline and the free radical damage accelerates and the signs of aging start to appear. Wrinkles, liver spots, graying hair, muscle atrophy are the external signs. Internally our organs, vascular system, hormones, cellular and intracellular damage and inefficiencies no longer allow our body’s to keep up with the damage.

Inflammation wreaks havoc on our bodies if systemic and long term. Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection. It mobilizes the body’s repair and immune system to repair an injury or fight off an invader. Once the body is healed or invader defeated, the inflammation goes away as it’s job is done. Systemic inflammation is the immune system run amok, on overdrive for extended periods of time with no specific target. This is not healthy as the inflammation is essentially the immune system attacking the body as if it is an invader – parasite, virus, bacteria, mold, yeast or other “non-friendly”.

Systemic inflammation damages the body’s organs and cells with a rush of inflammatory cytokines.  Creating free radicals that accelerate aging as it is “burning the candle on both ends” fighting a non-enemy. Cardiovascular disease is a good example. Inflammation contributes to damaged arteries and the oxidized cholesterol that lines the arterial walls. Curcumin calms the inflammation, fights the free radicals that cause lipid peroxidation on the vascular endothelial cells of the arteries (clogging the arteries).

Curcumin is looking to be one of the best anti aging supplements available. It is inexpensive and available at any health store. It’s many other health helping properties make it extremely valuable as well. No wonder curcumin is in so many anti aging formulas – it is so powerful. So do yourself a favor and add curcumin to your wellness and anti aging regimen.
