If You Want to be a Morning Person, Start Acting Like One

I know.  You hate those types of people who open their eyes in the Morning, jump out of bed and are ready to conquer the day.  Not everyone wakes up naturally perky and full of energy. Many of us hear the selected iPhone ringtone and throw the blankets over our head and hide out instead. If you curse the morning chaos and spend your morning routine thinking about how long it will be till your back in bed again, it’s time to figure out a better way—starting with a positive outlook. These eight tips will help improve your life:

1.  The obvious – Stop telling yourself  that you are NOT a morning person.  As a life coach, it makes me cringe to hear someone say that this is the reason they do not get things done in the morning  It’s pretty amazing how a simple reframe of this statement can change your entire outlook and your productivity.  Tell yourself that you ARE a morning person and like magic, you start becoming one.  It’s that simple.

2. Get up at the same time every day.  You know when you strangely wake up just minutes before your alarm sounds? That’s your internal clock. Use it wisely and one day you won’t even need an alarm clock. Also, make sure to limit the amount of time you spend sleeping in on the weekends, as this can throw off your body’s natural rhythm.

3. Be excited about your day!  – Who knows what the day will bring. There is always something to look forward to. Even if that something is calling a friend to catch up, or trying out a new place for lunch (hey, it’s the little things, right?). While it would be an ideal world for everyone to love their job, that’s simply not the case. But set up activities or dinners with friends throughout the week you look forward to. Give yourself a reason to hop out of bed. Don’t wait for the weekend to be excited.

4. Do something that makes you happy. Right away.  Whether it’s listening to your favorite music, indulging in your favorite muffin, or going for a quick run, set aside time in your morning routine to do something just for you—and that makes you feel great. Take time to really enjoy it.  Just don’t press snooze!  Snooze is the

5. Get moving as quickly as possible. Even if it means just walking to the kitchen for a glass of OJ. When we lay in bed, checking our Instagram, we are allowing ourselves to let the grogginess stay put. The moment you wake up, get up and get moving. Expose yourself to natural light. Throughout the day make sure to continue to get some rays.  You need that Vitamin D.

6.Get more sleep. Duh, right? So irritating for even me to hear myself say that. Not only do many of us wish we had more sleep, we actually need more sleep. Just like we need to make time for working out, we need to schedule 7-9 hours of sleep into our day because it is one of the most essential parts of our health. What we get from a good night’s rest cannot be supplemented elsewhere.

7.  Work out in the morning. Okay, you’re probably thinking, “Are you insane? I can barely wake up in time to hit Starbucks, let alone the gym.” But working out gets rid of the bad toxins in your body, ones that negatively affect our sleep at night and it also gives us the energy we need for the entire day. Obviously, a good workout is something everyone should be fitting into their schedules on a regular basis anyway. But for those of us that are so busy we think we can’t even afford more sleep, working out can sometimes be put on the back burner — which is a huge mistake.  Huuuuge.

8. Try an app. There are several apps that promise to get you out of bed in the a.m. For example, Wake n Shake makes you shake your phone in order to turn off the app, while Better Me shares your failure to your Facebook every time you hit snooze. Nothing better than public humiliation to keep you accountable!

Waking up early has many advantages. Not only does it allow more time for both productivity and leisure, but its proven to make our days less stressful.  Once you are able to start waking up earlier, the way you spend your time is yours. Maybe you want an extra hour every morning to follow your entrepreneurial dreams. Maybe you want a few moments of peaceful alone time on the porch.  Maybe you want to get in an hour of exercise (see, you can fit it in!)

Take some of your new found time at the start of your day to focus on being present in the moment. Life is hectic, and we are constantly being pulled in opposite directions. The morning is the perfect time to catch up with yourself.
