Tufts Harvard Support Omega3s Child Brain Development

This is exciting data that re-confirms some of the studies that have been published supporting this.

Scientists from both Tufts University and Harvard University did a meta-analysis of 15 gold standard Randomized Controlled Trials and reported that out of the 2,525 children they saw improved motor skills from the supplementation of Omega-3s with DHA and EPA.

This was consumed by the mother during pregnancy and by the child in infancy.

The also reported that supplementation with DHA and Arachidonic Acid (AA) raised the mental development scores in children.

These findings reiterate the importance of sufficient omega-3 fat intake by pregnant women as well as young children.

The scientists searched a number of different scientific databases for randomized controlled trials that were longer than 3 months and that studied neurodevelopment or cognition in children consuming Omega-3 supplements.

They found 15 gold standard trials with 20 measured markers or what scientists call intervention arms and 4 of the trials were with women during pregnancy and 16 studied infant supplementation.

The average supplement duration was 7.3 months and cognitive measure of the infant were taken around 16 months old.

The results showed that both maternal and infant supplementation improved neurodevelopment and that specifically motor skills and mental development were additional benefits.

So if you have an infant and you don’t already get them on a liquid DHA Omega-3 supplement.  There are many out there specifically designed for infants and dosages are based on weight of the infant.

Soon to be moms there are also specific DHA Omega-3 supplements you can consume during pregnancy and many pre-natal vitamin supplements now include DHA in their formulas.

Here are even more benefits to consuming EFA and DHA regularly every day. >>
