In November 2022, the UK found over 50 cases of diphtheria among asylum seekers. Before the vaccine was invented, it was one of the deadliest childhood diseases in history. It caused devastating outbreaks and had a high death toll. Because of this, it was also known as the ‘children’s plague’ and struck fear in the hearts of parents worldwide.
