[ps2id id=’1′ target=”/]What are Kidney Stones?

If you’ve ever had a decent sized kidney stone – you’ll know it. Some people say the pain of passing one is worse than delivering a baby! Kidney Stones are a crystalline structure usually made of calcium, oxate and uric acid. They form in the kidneys. The body usually tries to pass them through our urine. When they break loose and push into the ureters the narrow ducts which lead to our bladder, they can cause an obstruction.

Kidney stones have been around for centuries. There was even found in a 7,000-year old Egyptian mummy, but they didn’t used to be so common. Fifty years ago, kidney stones were a rare occurrence. Due to dietary changes, lifestyle changes, and an increase in toxins in our water, soil, and air, kidney stones are happening more frequently in adult populations, and sometimes affecting children as young as five.

According to a Harvard health study, about 50% pf people who have a kidney stone will have them again in the future. Others suggest the recurrence rate is even higher – about 70 to 80 percent, and the younger you are when you have your first attack, the greater your risk of recurrence.

[ps2id id=’2′ target=”/]Symptoms of Kidney Stones

In many cases kidney stones will pass through the urine without causing any additional health problems. Often, they are small enough that you don’t even feel them go through. When they become larger though, they can cause significant, as well as sudden pain.

Usually the larger they are the more painful they can be as the body tries to pass them through as we urinate. As the stone or stones move through the urinary tract they can get stuck, causing pain and infection. You may also experience:

  • Sudden, severe pain that comes and goes in intensity. Common areas afflicted include the back, groin, abdomen, side, and genitals.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blood in the urine or abnormal urine colors
  • Frequent and/or painful urination as the body tries to remove the stone

Types of Kidney Stones

There are different types of kidney stones, thought to be caused by the modern diet, a sedentary lifestyle, as well as the impediment of the normal metabolism of food and other contaminants found in our bodies like heavy metals, pesticides, genetically modified foods, fluoridated water, high fructose corn syrup found in many processed foods, and different minerals (or the lack thereof) that aren’t filtered by the kidneys properly.

These include:

Struvite: This type of kidney stone is found most often in women with urinary tract infections. They can cause an obstruction, making it difficult to urinate, but if the underlying infection is treated, the stones usually dissolve.

Calcium: The most common type of kidney stone among both men and women, calcium-oxate, phosphate and maleate stones can be reduced by eating fewer foods that contain oxalate such as potato chips, peanuts, beets, spinach and chocolate; however, a healthy diet in general as well as good hydration and exercise can also reduce their incidence.

Uric Acid: Uric acid kidney stones are more common in men than in women, but they happen more often in both sexes when they have undergone chemotherapy. This acid becomes overabundant in the body and creates stones. It has been found that a diet high in purines, a substance which comes from animal proteins, can also lead to uric acid kidney stones.

Cystine: This is the most rare form of kidney stone. It forms in both men and women who have a genetic disorder called cystinuria. It causes acid to leak into the urine from the kidneys.

[ps2id id=’3′ target=”/]What Causes Kidney Stones?

Most stones occur when calcium combines with one of two substances: oxalate or phosphorous. Stones can also form from uric acid, a substance that forms as the body metabolizes protein

Certain drugs can also promote kidney stones, such as Lasix (furosemide), Topomax (topiramate), and Xenical, among others.

Additionally, pain medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ulcer medications, and even antibiotics can cause kidney and liver damage, making it more difficult for your body to remove toxins which may lead to kidney stones.

Why the Kidneys Are So Important

The kidneys are like your body’s chemists. They balance, clean, and stabilize your body’s blood every five minutes throughout the day, every day the entire time you are alive. 200 quarts of fluid move through your kidneys in a single 24-hour period. That’s a lot of work.

The main job of the kidneys if to purify waste in the body and to remove excess fluid through urine production. They also regulate the body’s mineral levels and stimulate the production of red blood cells. Kidneys also help strengthen your bones by producing an active form of vitamin D.

A very precise chemical balance in your body is regulated by the kidneys. They maintain your blood’s perfect ratio of acidity and minerals, which include sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, hydrogen and magnesium.  By controlling the body’s chemistry, the kidneys help every organ, including the heart.

Without well-supported kidneys, you are more likely to develop kidney stones.

Sadly, many of our modern ways of life are harmful to the kidneys and prevent them from doing the job they were meant to do. This is why kidney stones happen.

How Can I Prevent Kidney Stones?

  • Drink more water. If you drink at least 2 liters of water daily, the urine becomes diluted, making it more difficult for stones to form, as well as making it easier for them to pass. With all that fluid passing through the kidneys you might be surprised that we need to drink so much water, but without it, our blood becomes more toxic, making the kidneys work harder to remove the impurities that linger there.

  • Drink water that hasn’t been fluoridated. Sodium fluoride added to many municipal water supplies is linked to higher incidence of kidney stones
  • Exercise More. Moderate exercise can lower high blood pressure, which can keep your heart and kidneys healthy.
  • Eat less sugar. You should especially avoid sugary drinks like soda. The amount of sugar in a single can of soda (typically around 40 grams) is enough to disrupt the mineral levels in your body, making a kidney stone more likely to happen.
  • Get enough magnesium. This single mineral is responsible for more than 300 different biochemical reactions in your body. It just happens to prevent calcium from combining with oxalate – the most common type of kidney stone. Foods high in magnesium include avocadoes, green leafy vegetables like Swiss chard and spinach, and pumpkin seeds.
  • Ditch soy unless its fermented. Soy and soy-based foods are linked to the creation of oxalates, which bind with calcium to form kidney stones. If you must eat soy, choose the fermented version since the process reduces phytate which can block your body’s uptake of essential minerals. Oxalate levels are also much lower in fermented soy.
  • Eat enough calcium. If you don’t consume enough calcium that occurs naturally in the foods you eat, oxalate levels start to rise in the body, which can cause kidney stones. (Some calcium supplements can also cause kidney stones, though, so it is best to get the calcium in its natural form from foods).
  • Lower the sodium in your diet. Eating too much table salt can increase the amount of calcium in your urine. You don’t want calcium there- it should stay in your bones! Reduce your daily sodium intake to below 1,500 mg.
  • Limit animal protein. It has been proven that eating a diet high in animal proteins like meat, fish and eggs, not only makes your body more acid, but it also contributes to higher levels of uric acid. Animal proteins also lower citrate, a desirable chemical that prevents kidney stones.
  • Be careful with Vitamin C supplements. Although it is rare, some men who take Vitamin C supplements have a higher incidence of kidney stones, likely because the excess Vitamin C is changed into oxalate.

How Are Kidney Stones Normally Treated?

Kidney stones are a growing health problem for people throughout the world. Aside from prevention of their formation in the first place, the removal of kidney stones can vary in cost and invasiveness. Doctors usually try to avoid surgery but if they feel the kidney stone will cause additional health problems, they will usually act quickly and try to prescribe the removal of the stone with surgery or other methods.

Typically a kidney stone is treated by:

  • Ureteroscopic Surgery. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia to treat kidney stones located in the middle and lower ureter. A small, fiberoptic instrument (ureteroscope) is passed through the urethra and bladder and into the ureter.
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or nephrolithotripsy surgery. In this procedure the surgeon makes a small cut in your back. He or she then puts a hollow tube into your kidney and either removes (lithotomy) or breaks up and removes (lithotripsy) the stone. This surgery may be used if other procedures do not work or if you have a very large stone. With this procedure you can expect to be in the hospital for up to three days, and cannot return to your normal activities for several weeks.
  • In open surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in your side or stomach to reach the kidneys and then removes the stone. You can expect to be in the hospital for up to a week and unable to return to your normal activities between a month and six weeks.
  • Non-invasive lithotripsy is a procedure that shocks the kidney stones in hopes that they will break up and then pass more easily through the urinary tract. Though this is less painful and invasive, unfortunately this treatment is not necessarily better, as it can lead to the formation of more kidney stones.
  • Parathyroid gland surgery. Some kidney stones are thought to be caused by an overactive thyroid, but often even these kidney stones can be removed without surgery using natural alternatives.
  • Pain medications as well as pharmaceutical drugs are also administered to try to get the kidney stone to dissolve. These are often ineffective because they simply treat the symptoms of the kidney stones, and don’t correct the imbalances in the body causing the stones to form.

[ps2id id=’4′ target=”/]Natural Remedies That Don’t Always Work

There are many natural remedies for kidney stones, but these don’t all work – essentially because they don’t address the roto problem of the stone’s formation – just as with traditional medicine’s more invasive surgeries or shock therapies.

Among these are:

  • Coke and Asparagus – this can actually cause the kidney stone or stones to grow larger
  • Lemon Juice and Olive Oil – This is a decent remedy for purifying the body overall, but lemon juice is very acidic. This remedy also isn’t very successful
  • Lab Grade Chanca Piedra – Studies have shown this herb can help to dissolve kidney stones
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – though ACV can help flush the kidneys and help break down food in the stomach, it isn’t very successful in treating kidneys stones

The other problem with these ‘home’ remedies is that they are often used when the kidney stone is already causing pain and is quite large. By the time someone tries to ‘cure’ the kidney stone with one of these remedies it is too late, and the underlying conditions which formed the stone have not been fixed.

Hi, my name is Marianne, I am from Brisbane, Australia. I have Kidney stones for last few years. 2 Years ago, I got them removed by a procedure, but this year they started to bother me again. This time I was more careful and my Doctor told me to undergo the same procedure one more time. I understood from somewhere else that this problem resurfaces again and again. So, I wanted to try alternatives and looked at Grocare India’s products. Initially with disbelief, I ordered for 3 months, but the medicines arrived in 5 days flat, nice packing, nice presentation, and I was pleasantly surprised, coming it from India. Within 2 weeks of starting the treatment, my pain reduced and kept reducing and it is almost gone. I am now through one and a half months, and I am confident that I will be cured. I used to get blinding pain on the left side of my stomach after which I was diagnosed with multiple kidney stones upon getting an ultrasound done. I was given many options to get rid of them but none of them spoke about how to remove current stones and not to prevent them from coming back altogether. Thats when a friend suggested to call up Grocare India on their helpline. They gave me Acidim, GC and vinidia and very nicely explained how it will help me. Its been three months now and I already feel so much better.*

Ashish Venkat, Thiruvananthapuram

I underwent ureteroscopic surgery and had one 16mm. kidney stone removed a year and a half ago. 6 months ago I was suggested another surgery for a new 11mm stone. It seemed like an endless cycle to me and someone suggested trying alternate medicine. I was taking something but the pain only kept increasing. So my friend, Akhilesh told me that he took Grocare’s medicine and was much better now. He also had same problem but he had much worse. After 4 months I can say that grocare medicine has helped a lot. Really thank you so very much. I want my feedback to be seen by others for their benefit.*
