7 Situations that Need Emergency Dental Treatment

Dental emergencies can come knocking at our doors any time and are as unexpected as hail in summer. Any damage on the insides of mouth can hurt, and lead to a reduction in or complete loss of food intake, which ruins our health further. Dental emergencies require to be treated immediately. Some injuries can be cured well if the patient is treated within 30 minutes of the injury. The longer it gets delayed, the harder it is to be treated.

Types of Dental Emergencies:

Let us look at some injuries or pains which need medical care and should not be taken for granted.

1. Chipped or Broken Tooth

Teeth can break or chip-out when hard food is chewed or in accidents. In this case, the person should wash their mouth with lukewarm water to keep the area clean. The use of a cold compress or ice pack to reduce swelling is preferred. But visiting a dentist as soon as possible for expert opinion is a must. It may look as small damage from the outside, but it may have deeper breakage.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

Firstly, see if you can retrieve the fallen Tooth. It can be replaced if not damaged beyond repair. Do not rinse/ wash the tooth with water. Immerse it in milk or saliva on the way to the dentist to keep it moist. Always hold the tooth from the crown end and not the roots. Keeping the tooth germ-free can avoid any infections to other teeth and increase the chances of being fit again.

3. Toothaches

There are many conditions that lead to a toothache. The first remedy in most cases is to rinse and clean mouth and remove any leftover food particles between the teeth. After the cleaning, pain removal medicines like aspirin should not be placed directly on the aching tooth. You can ask your dentist for any over-the-counter pain relief medication. But visit the dentist if the pain continues even after the medication.

4. Bitten Lip, Tongue or Cheek

Accidentally biting lip, tongue or cheek is a common occurrence while eating food in haste. It may also occur when a person falls. Applying ice packs on the adjacent cheek can help lower the bleeding. But in cases when the bleeding is severe and doesn’t stop within 15 minutes of the accidental biting, one needs to rush to the dentist.

5. Tooth or Gum Abscess

Abscesses are the collection of pus that occurs due to infection. They mostly occur after one or two days of infection. There are two types of abscesses according to the place where they materialize. They can be in the space between a tooth and gum when there are any leftover food particles. They can also occur inside a tooth when the tooth has dead or dying nerves. If not treated, abscesses can damage adjacent teeth and gums also. They are extremely painful in most cases and can lead to chills, fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Such cases should be treated as soon as possible.

6. Denture Repairs

If you find that your denture has fallen and broken, you need to visit the dentist. Broken dentures can hurt gums and can cause further injuries. Dentures are an important part of routine life and need maintenance as soon as possible. Under normal circumstances, a denture can be mended in a single visit.

7. Sports Injuries

Last but not least, we know that sports dental injuries can be bad. Wearing mouthguards can reduce the risks of getting your teeth broken on the field manifolds. But still, in the events leading to damaged teeth on the ground, you should immediately consult a dentist.
