Healthy Smiles – Emergency Dental Procedures

Emergencies at the Dental clinic can happen at any time. Emergencies can include abscess in an adult or a child from dental caries or a fracture of a filling or existing Tooth structure.

At Healthy Smiles we believe that emergencies are a priority and we use a triage system to make sure that patients who are in distress and pain are prioritised and seeing on the same day or at the worse the next business day.

Let’s talk about the most common emergency which is an abscess developing in adult spontaneously. These absences usually happen due to decay eating away the structure and involving the pulp of the tooth which is also called the nerve canals. Caries can cause the nerves to die and produce toxins and gases within the pulp chamber. This causes the tooth to become very tender to touch and often leads to extreme pain which radiates up-and-down the job off.

I advise patients when we cannot see them, to avoid hot to drink and also not eat anything hard on the affected tooth.

This prevents the tooth from becoming more involved down the path of infection and flaring up in the middle of the night

The second most common emergency in the dental Office is a broken tooth or a filling. When the break happens part of the inside portion of the tooth call the dentine can get exposed which can lead to sensitivity in tooth. The best thing to do is to avoid eating on that side And cover the tooth with a sugarfree chewing gum

Avoid hot and cold and call your dentist as soon as possible considering the nerve canal is still intact most likely that it will need a ceramic onlay or a crown as a best long-term option.

The third most common emergency in the dental office is an accident which can happen to an adult or a child. The most common accidents involving the child can be avulsion of the tooth that is coming out of the socket. If this happens make sure you clean it gently with water and store in saliva which is the best agent to store it. Do not try and brush and see your dentist ASAP

Whatever your emergency maybe it is important to not to go just see a general practitioner or a medical practitioner for dental advice as this is often the case.

Antibiotics prescribed by medical practioners is the most common cause of patients postponing seeing dentists which only makes dental problems more complex

Healthy smiles treats dental emergencies from all surrounding suburbs and we never say no on the phone or when an emergency walks in and patients are in pain. After all we have taken an oath to help our patients when they need it the most .
