Hold On

When does overwhelm push us to the edge?  Everyone asks, “what is the straw that broke the camels back?”  It’s an interesting question.  The idea something so small could make everything collapse is real.  It often stems from us pushing back on things much bigger because they seem Enormous.

Sometimes we Hear the phrase, “Hold on for dear life.”  Yes, life is dear, but not without challenges.  If we live in a place of merely “holding on”, eventually become so tired we let go.  When we fall, it can mean giving up on treatment, or having little faith in the Divine.  Letting go will often send us into freefall to a place often dark.  It’s the spiral into the abyss.

How can we face the challenges we meet along the way with curiosity?  If we stay in the question, are we more likely to jump to the next lily pad in the pond?  Do questions maintain a sense of engagement?  What do you think your active engagement looks like to others?

Holding on feels like a lonely place.  It’s not like there’s a lineup of people all hanging on to the cliff at the same time.  Support groups are an enormous benefit as an antidote to holding on.  We’re in a place with others who have experienced the same pain.  We learn strategies for confronting our fears.  Often, we can get the phone numbers of other members for those times we have as St. John of the Cross calls, “The dark night of the soul.”

I guess what I’m asking you is, instead of letting go, what if we learn to repel down the mountainside?  What if we’re actually tethered for safety and make it to the bottom safely with a new sense of confidence?  I’d love to hear what you think!
