Mom Varies Between Loving and Hating Her Assisted Living Home

Dear Carol: About three months ago, my mom moved from the home where she and my deceased dad had lived to an Assisted Living facility (ALF). This was her idea, and I was all for it, but her reaction is so inconsistent. She’ll love it for a while. New friends, interesting activities, feeling safer.  Then, she hates it. She says she’s a prisoner since she can’t drive anymore, and she needs to be signed out. She’ll gripe about the other people or complain about the staff. Then it’s back to loving it. When she’s negative, I remind her about what she’s loved about it, but this just makes her sulk. Is there a better way to respond? – ML
