Medical Animation Explaining Stages of Pregnancy

We bring you a stunning medical animation which shows different stages of pregnancy, right from the formation of the blastocyst to implantation and eventually the process of childbirth in 3D. It’s a short depiction of baby’s nine months journey which starts with the fertilization of the sperm with the ovum leading to embryogenesis.

1. Release of Mature Ovum

A mature ovum becomes available for fertilization once it is released from the ovary through the Fallopian Tube.

2. Fertilization

Through the journey of the ovum, even if one sperm manages to make its way into the fallopian tube and penetrate into it, fertilization occurs.

Simultaneously, as a routine, the lining of the uterus thickens to prepare for the implantation of the fertilized egg.

3. Cell Division

The fertilized egg or the zygote begins to undergo cell division within 24 hours. By the time it travels down the fallopian tube and reaches the uterus, it has already become a multicellular blastocyst. This blastocyst attaches itself to the uterine wall where the fetus further matures.

4. Development inside the uterus

A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks and is divided into three stages or trimesters.

First Trimester (0 Weeks–13 and 6/7 Weeks or Months 1–3)

It starts with the first day of the last menstrual period and ends with the last day of the 13th week thereafter. During the last period, the uterus is preparing for ovulation and the body is gearing up for pregnancy.

Second Trimester(14 and 0/7 Weeks 27 and 6/7 weeks or Months 4 –7)

Third Trimester (28 and 0/7 Weeks– 40 and 6/7 Weeks or Months 7–9)

5. Parturition

Usually, by the end of 37 weeks, the baby is the baby is considered fully grown and its organs are capable of functioning on their own. Nearing due date, the baby aligns itself into a head-down position for birth.

Childbirth occurs through labor which usually involves three stages:

  1. shortening of the cervical opening (accompanied with abdominal cramps),
  2. contractions causing the fetus to descend and come out, and finally
  3. pushing out of the placenta.
