Getting the Most Out of Your Dental Visit

Contrary to popular opinion, Dental visits are not just meant for treatment and cleaning of teeth. This is why most people normally go to the Dentist and come back ‘empty-handed’ because they believe the visits are meant for just treatment. Every single time you visit your dentist, it is a massive learning opportunity besides the check-ups and treatment that you are likely to get during the visit. The fact that you are likely to visit your dentist only twice or thrice in a year, means that you have to make the most out of every single visit. You have to maximize on the few minutes or probably hours that you have with your dentist to better yourself. For many people though, the idea of making the most out of a thirty-minute visit to the dentist is more than ridiculous! I mean what else can you do with your dentist except the routine check-ups and maybe treatment? What can you possibly ask the dentist during these few minutes? How do you make the most out of your dental visits?

Well, we talked to Dr. Jin Shoo, DDS and she gave us very useful insights on how you can make the most out of a simple routine dental visit. According to Dr. Jin Shoo, the dental visit is a massive opportunity to interact with your dentist and get a better understanding of your health.

Here are 5 tips on how you can make the most out of your routine dental visits

  1. Preparation is key

If you are to make the most out of your visit to the dentist, then you have to prepare yourself adequately for the visit. By adequately preparing, Dr. Jin Shoo, DDS means that you make a checklist of all the concerns, queries and perhaps questions that you will want to discuss with the dentist during the visit. Compile a list of all the questions and dental concerns that have been bothering you in the last few months and be prepared to ask the dentist about them. If you have been seeing blood stains when brushing your teeth, then jot it down and ask your dentist. Going into the session without a checklist, will make you forget very important issues which might prove costly in the end.

  1. Update your medical history

Six months is a very long period of time and a lot can happen in between. When you visit the dentists at the end of six months, make sure that you narrate to the dentist any important medical conditions that you may have encountered in the last few months. Some people think that keeping such conditions to themselves is good for the sake of privacy but this can be a very big risk. Conditions such as diabetes affect your teeth and your dentist needs to know. Update him/her on all the relevant conditions and let them be aware of what is going on in your life. The more they know, the better care they will offer.

  1. Dietary concerns

This is the perfect opportunity you have to talk matters diet with your dentist. If there is a certain food you ate and it had adverse effects on your teeth, then this is the perfect time to lay it out with dentist and get his/her two sides of the coin. Dentists have a very good understanding of the right foods that you should be eating and they will offer their advice if you are willing to listen. Just make sure that you heed to their advice because no one wants to repeat the same thing after every six months.

  1. Talk finances

Most people shy away from indulging their dentists in their financial matters. During the routine visit, you can use the opportunity to let the dentist know that things are not going too well financially and that you might be looking for low cost options. A good dentist will always offer a listening ear and advise you appropriately on the same matter.

  1. Bonding session

This is the perfect time to catch up on the latest developments in one another life. Use the routine visit as a bonding session with your dentist and engage in a hearty conversation with him/her. The more used you become to your dentist, the more likely you are to share important matters to him/her. Bond as much as you can with your dentist and you will realize that this has a positive impact on your relationship.
