Muhammad Ali – A Fighter In and Out of the Ring

The Best of All Time

Born Cassius Clay on January 17, 1942, but known today as Muhammad Ali, he is perhaps boxing’s most famous face. Not only was he a champion in the ring, but he was also an activist and one of the most celebrated sports figures of the 20th century. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali began his epic career with amateur boxing, winning his very first fight by the age of 12. Just six years later he took home the gold medal in the light heavyweight division in the 1960 summer Olympics. He went pro the very next year. In 1964, he snagged his first heavyweight title and to this day remains the only boxer to have won three heavyweight titles in 1964, 1974, and 1978.

Highs and Lows

After refusing the draft of the Vietnam war, Ali was stripped of his titles and boxing eligibility as he became the first public figure to speak out against the war. This resulted in a three and a half year break from the sport that made him famous. He returned to the boxing scene for several big name fights, including his wins over Liston, George Foreman, and then a loss to Joe Frazier, who was awarded Ali’s title when it was taken from him. Perhaps his most famous fight was again against Frazier, this time a brutal fourteen-round fight that Ali ultimately won.

Gone Not Forgotten

When it came to gearing up for a fight, Ali didn’t believe in lifting weights, he wanted to stay light, as his best weapon was agility in the ring. His incredible footwork came from miles of running which helped him build the muscles he needed to outwork his opponents. Ali is now remembered for more than just his undisputed dominance in the ring, including the voice he gave to many who couldn’t raise their own

Aim for four rounds, working for 30 seconds, resting 10 seconds between each exercise.

  1. Sit-ups with legs held vertically – Lay down on the ground and raise your legs so that your toes are toward the ceiling and your legs create a 90 degree angle with your torso. Place your arms over your chest and use your abdominals to pull your upper body up off the floor while keeping your legs extended up.
  2. Sit-ups: legs slightly raised off the ground – Stay in the same position as above but lower your legs to a few inches off the ground, keeping them in the air. Repeat steps above.
  3. Reverse crunch – Lay back on the ground with your hands underneath your neck and your legs extended straight above you. Using your lower abs this time, raise your butt off the ground, sending your legs up in the air towards the ceiling to work those lower abs.
  4. Jump rope: side-to-side and back-and-forth – Grab your DynaPro jump rope and adjust it so that its set for your height. Then swing the rope and jump forward and back. Once you master that add in jumping side to side
  5. Shadow boxing in mirror for rounds – Stagger your feet, one in front of the other, and bring your hands up to your face. Then practice your best punches while shifting your weight forward and backward, staying light on your feet.
