5 Dog Myths Revealed

NuVet Labs feels that the best dog parent is an educated dog parent. As a result, we thought it might be helpful to dispel some commonly believed dog myths that have been circulating among the dog loving community and just folks in general. Continue reading. We think you are going to find the truth quite illuminating.

1) Dog's mouths are cleaner than a human's

Unfortunately this is just simply not the case. We're not saying that a human's mouth is necessarily cleaner than a dog's mouth but doggie mouths can contain some pretty icky stuff. If you have ever seen them lick their hind quarters you know what we are talking about. Dog's also have a tendency to pick up things outside that really do not belong in a mouth like the fecal material of other dogs or what one vet calls "tootsie rolls" from the cat's litter box. So imagine that getting on your face or in your mouth from one of those beloved doggie smooches you are so fond of? Also, just like a human mouth, if a dog's teeth aren't brushed on a regular basis a lot of bacteria and other fun stuff can build up on their teeth and gums. Lastly, it is very possible for a dog to pass along worms to their human owners if they have ingested worms and happen to give you a kiss.

2) My Dog eats grass when she is sick

Believe it or not, but some dogs simply like the taste of grass. They have evolved to eat many things and grass appears to be one of them. In modern times it is not generally a great idea to let your dog chow down on grass because of the chemicals and weed killers the grass may be treated with but from time to time you might find your pooch enjoying a nibble. Just keep an eye on it especially if you know your lawn is treated with chemicals.

3) Indoor dogs don't need heartworm medication

This might come as a surprise to some but all dogs, those who spend a lot of time inside and those who are outside more frequently should be getting treated for heartworm. Worms are transmitted via mosquitoes and as most people are aware, those pesky little insects can, and do, get indoors, which means they have access to Fido. If Fido gets bit by a mosquito with worms then they too may get infected with worms, which can be expensive to treat. Also, remember if your dog has worms and they give you a kiss they can pass it onto you. Ick!

4) Only male dogs hump other dogs

A lot of individuals who own female dogs would laugh at this myth. One such owner knows from experience that her female Silky-Shih Tzu often likes to hump the family cat. Yes the cat. A tolerant fellow, he just kind of sits there and waits for her to finish or be shooed away. Well, humping is simply a sign of dominance and female dogs are just as capable as their male counterparts of exerting dominance over other dogs (and cats) regardless of gender.

5) A female dog should have at least one litter of pups before spaying

This is quite a whopper of a myth. Female dogs absolutely do not have to have one litter of puppies before they are spayed. Imagine if this were true and your dog ended up having a huge litter of puppies that you were unable to find homes for? This way of thinking unfortunately, perpetuates the homeless dog problem that plagues many, many parts of the world. Also, there is a fair amount of evidence that shows spaying your pooch can actually enhance her quality of life and extend her life. Spaying has other health benefits as well. There is evidence to suggest that if you spay your dog prior to her first heat you can almost entirely eliminate the potential for her developing breast cancer later.

Unfortunately facts can sometimes get a little murky in the translation, which means that your pooch can end up being the victim of bad information, which could ultimately affect their health. One way you can help is by staying informed on relevant topics regarding your four-legged family member.
