14th November, the World Diabetes Day, is a call to generate awareness on diabetes and work towards the prevention and cure for the same. We all have been talking about a number of remedies and treatment for diabetes, but today we will talk about the importance of laughter in the prevention and management of diabetes.

How laughter affects blood glucose level? 

Laughter has a number of health benefits and its correlation with Blood Glucose level can be established very well. Studies reveal that laughter lowers the level of stress hormones like Cortisol and adrenaline. The well famous stress hormones are always thought to affect your blood pressure and heart health, however, one of them, “cortisol”, has also been found to make your body insulin resistant. The other one, “adrenaline” can force your liver to push more of glucose in the bloodstream, directly affecting the level of blood glucose level. Considering the notorious role of these hormones in the onset or worsening of diabetes, who will not consider laughing every day as a costless treatment for diabetes. Even doctors suggest to laugh daily and bring positive lifestyle changes to diabetic patients.

Some other benefits of laughter include enhanced immunity, lowered risk of stroke and heart diseases, relief in pain and inflammation, toned skin, less hair fall, and a general sense of wellbeing.

The life keeps on throwing unpleasant surprises and it is quite possible to feel low sometimes. But, you need to remind yourself to laugh. It should be a way of living. Below are a few things you should include in your routine to keep laughing every day.

  • Watch Funny Videos: You might be spending some time in front of the TV, YouTube or social media. Change your taste now for your health. Like and share comedy videos so that more of them get pushed to you. Distract yourself from watching things that make you sad and dull.

  • Go Social: Don’t feed your illness by being alone and thinking about it. Especially, in diabetes, which is basically a condition that can be easily managed. Keep meeting people, go out in friends’ group and interact more.  The laughter bursts on its own when a people meet and chat together.

  • Stay among Children: Spending some time with children can really be great. They are honest, spontaneous, and unpredictable. Their innocent actions are enough to make you laugh. Go to a children’s parks daily or spend some time with a neighboring child. Being with children and running behind them will also bring some physical activity, much needed for diabetes patients.

  • Bring Pets Home: Being along with pets can have many other health benefits. However, for laughter, no one can stop giggling looking at the cute moves, yawns, and wagging tails of the pets.
If you have diabetes, you are at risk of diabetes, or someone in your family has diabetes, then take the first step by being happy and making others happy. Mostly, the things which do not cost are considered invaluable. But laughter is not. It can be a life sentence for many. Make laughter a culture of your house and bring home health.
