Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition – Review

When Tomb Raider was released in 2013, it was met with applause and favorable reviews. In light of the transition to the next generation of gaming consoles, a newer, polished version is being released.

At a much greater price than the original, however, is this next-gen version of the game really worth pulling out your wallet for?

Nothing from the original version has been omitted, though some things have been added. Single-player mode, which takes the campaign approach, features a well-written plot, excellent character development, and beautiful environments.

As a bonus, all of the aftermarket downloadable content that was only available through additional purchases with the original version comes bundled with this new release.

Classic Tomb Raider puzzle-solving is still a major facet of the game, though now it is been blended with modernized action-adventure gameplay, giving it a feeling of both freshness and familiarity.

Most of the major overhauls are in the technological department. Rather than 720p, the game now runs at a dazzling 1080p HD. This little bump alone makes the gaming experience infinitely better. Not only that but for PS4 gamers, the frame rate has been doubled as well, jumping from 30 fps to 60. In-game textures, including water, buildings, backgrounds, everything in the environment, has been revamped for the new version. Those who have Played the original version will absolutely be able to notice the difference.

There are a number of instances while playing the game when the newer graphic systems really stand out. There may be no better example of this than the character close-ups. Dirt on the skin and fingernails are now clearly visible scuff marks appear, even the pores in the skin can be made out.

Combine this with the motion-captured cinematic sequences and stellar acting and you have a game that delivers an intense amount of realism. These features in the new addition make exploring the Expensive for regular players.

After rattling off all of those bonuses, it may be difficult to come up with a reason to dislike the game. Unfortunately, even though this game is simply a prettier version of a game released over a year ago, the price tag would suggest it is a brand new release. In fact, this re-release does not actually offer much else besides the downloadable content and the new graphics.

Any gamer who has played or owns the original game, however, may find themselves feeling that the full price of a next-generation console game ought to offer a little more in compensation in terms of new game features than just a simple facelift.

The downloadable content is nice, but graphics aside, it brings nothing new that was not already available.

For those who have not played it or missed out, those early adopters of next-generation consoles and those who want the game simply to appreciate the beauty of it are design, this is a solid purchase. This game will not disappoint and is sure to bring endless hours of fun and an enthralling story.
