Why take an inhaler

Patients of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are usually prescribed their medications that have to be taken directly into their Lungs using an inhaler. This is much different from the usual way of taking medication as tablets, syrups or capsules.

WHY?
  • Inhaled medicines are delivered directly to your lungs where these are required.
  • As these go to lungs directly, a much smaller dose is required. When you take a tablet for headache, it is absorbed into the blood and a little bit is also delivered to your hand or foot where it is not required. This is extra drug that is simply wasted. Medicines for lung are not required in your stomach or other parts of the body. So why not give these only to lungs? A smaller amount would do.
  • All medicines have some bad effects on your body. We tolerate these because we want to get well. The smaller dose required when these are given from an inhaler also means that bad effects are much less.
  • Medicines to lungs act fast, within minutes. If you are breathless you want quick relief and you get it using an inhaler. A tablet will first get broken down in stomach, get absorbed into blood, go around in the body and then reach the lungs. Why wait for so long?

So, next time your doctor says you need to take inhalers, don't say "no"
