DIY Grout Cleaner

This Diy Grout Cleaner is not only effective but super simple to make. Best of all, it can be made using ingredients likely already in your home that can remove grime, mildew, and dirt without a toxic chemical in sight.

DIY Grout Cleaner Vs Store Bought

Cleaning Grout is one of those jobs that are easily overlooked but so hard to remedy once it gets bad. From mildew to soap scum, the build-up on grout can seem impossible to conquer which often leads to carts full of chemicals at the store. Not anymore.

Thanks to this DIY Grout Cleaner you can scrub away safely knowing there are no harmful ingredients. Grout is porous so the constant use of harsh chemicals can contribute to corrosion as well as discolor your tiles.

If you want to declutter your bathroom, the last thing you want is multiple cleaning products taking up valuable storage. By switching to this DIY grout cleaner, you are equipped with a disinfectant, degreaser, and whitener all in one.

Although store-bought grout cleaner can be convenient, it’s essential when cleaning your home that your health and the environment are taken into consideration. Not only do you want to avoid breathing in poisonous chemicals, but those chemicals will then be washed down your drain and poison ecosystems later down the line.

A few popular ingredients in store-bought grout cleaners include:

  • 2-Butoxyethanol: There are concerns about the effects it has on the digestive system as well as possible cancer risk and respiratory effects.
  • Sodium Hypochlorite: This can cause skin irritation as well as damage to vision and respiratory issues.
  • Alumina: Not only can it cause skin damage and irritation, there are also concerns for respiratory effects.

Ingredients to Make DIY Grout Cleaner

  • Hydrogen peroxide: helps to naturally whiten and brighten surfaces. It also acts as a disinfectant for mildew, bacteria, dirt and grime.
  • Baking soda: There are so many uses for baking soda, but it is great for cleaning in particular. It is a natural abrasive that scrubs away stains, mildew and hard water build up. It also helps to naturally whiten and brighten surfaces.
  • Liquid dish soap: cleans surfaces and helps to lift stains and greasy spots. Opt for a natural dish soap like Thieves Dish Soap. A natural dish soap also helps avoid soap scum, which contributes to the build up on grout.
  • Lemon Essential Oil: It is one of the best essential oils for cleaning. Not only does Lemon essential oil help remove grease and stains, but it also helps to brighten surfaces too.

How to Make DIY Grout Cleaner Step by Step

  1. Add all ingredients to a squeezable bottle or small mixing bowl.
  2. Shake well or until all ingredients are mixed together. There shouldn’t be any clumps.
  3. Squeeze the DIY Grout Cleaner on grout or tile. If you don’t have a squeezable bottle, just use a small spoon to coat the grout. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Use a soft sponge, cleaning brush, or old toothbrush to clean the grout.
  5. Dip a soft sponge or microfiber cloth in water, and wipe away the Grout Cleaner. You may need to wipe with water several times to remove the Grout Cleaner.
  6. For hard stains, you can repeat this process and let sit for another 5-10 minutes before wiping away the cleaner.

How to Use This DIY Grout Cleaner

Apply the grout cleaner directly between tiles using a squeezy bottle or if you’ve prepared it in a mixing bowl use a small spoon to apply. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing then wipe off with a damp rag or microfibre cloth.

Patience is essential as the 5-10 minute wait allows the cleaner to cut through residue and remove mildew, discolorations and grime.  As a tip, use alongside a DIY shower cleaning spray for a naturally clean bathroom without the toxic chemicals.

Can I Omit the Dish Soap?

Yes, if you don’t have dish soap don’t panic. As long as you have the key ingredients which are the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mix. These two together really help to remove stains and brighten grout.

Can I Add Vinegar to This DIY Grout Cleaner?

Some people recommend scrubbing your grout with vinegar as it’s a cheap, natural way to make your surfaces sparkle. While using vinegar is one of my favorite natural cleaning hacks, grout is one of the things you should never clean with vinegar as it’s highly acidic so it can corrode the grout.

Can I Use This on All Grout in My Home?

The short answer is yes. This DIY grout cleaner can be used on the kitchen floor as well as your bathroom tiles. However, the consistency you use may vary depending on the area you are cleaning. For example, you may opt for more of a paste in the shower as this is where mildew is likely to build up and it’s easy to rinse off with the shower head. The kitchen, however, is a larger area so make the grout cleaner a little runnier so it’s easier to use and clean off.

Top Tips

  • When rinsing off your DIY grout cleaner, use steaming hot water for best results.
  • Don’t let the paste sit too long so it hardens as this may discolor your tile.
  • A squeezable bottle minimizes mess as you can apply directly to the grout
  • Grout can look dark when wet, so wait a few hours until it’s fully dry before assessing results.
