How to KonMari Your Home this Spring

This Spring, Konmari your home to save time and energy Decluttering your home. Thanks to Marie Kondo’s advice you can declutter and organize your home for spring cleaning with ease.

It’s no secret decluttering can feel overwhelming. However, the KonMari method works well as it focuses on category by category instead of room by room. This means tackling the clutter step by step to avoid overwhelm.

It requires you to empty an entire space at a time, making it easy to spring clean that area as you put your precious items back in their allocated homes.

If you are considering starting the KonMari method this spring, here’s what you should know:

Organize Your Belongings into Categories

The first step is going to make your home messy before it gets clean. You will want to remove every single item you have and divide them into a few basic categories.

Your main categories should be:

  • Clothing
  • Books
  • Paper
  • Miscellaneous
  • Sentimental

Once they are gathered in their primary category, you may need to subcategorize to make it easier to declutter and organize. This first step of the KonMari method allows you to see at a glance what you have and what you don’t need. Note, focus on sorting one category before starting on the next.

Hold Each Item in Your Hand

This is Marie Kondo’s central principle of decluttering and the main reason the KonMari method works. She asks that you hold each item in your hand and ask yourself if it sparks joy. If the answer is no, thank your items for their service and discard them.

As you are actively choosing the items that spark joy (and discarding those that don’t) the result is then a clutter-free home that has space for more joy and prosperity.

I find that the best way to do this is to have a few boxes or trash bags handy to divide the decluttering as you go. Label one trash, keep, and donate. This will save you time when it comes to the next step.

Properly Discard the Items You No Longer Wish to Keep

After you have decluttered and organized each category, take the time to properly sort the discarded items correctly. You may be able to hold a yard sale for some of your clutter, but otherwise, you may need to throw away, recycle, or find a donation center for the rest of your items.

The important thing is to make sure that you are discarding them immediately and not hanging onto these items for longer than you need to. If you have to, take your discarded items right to your car for donation. That way you can appreciate your clutter-free space quicker and avoid the temptation to keep items that no longer serve you.

Give Each Item a Proper Home

The last part is to give each item you choose to keep a proper home. This should be the place where this item is stored, so when you aren’t using this item, you should be able to put it back to where it belongs quickly.

First, start by deciding if your item needs to be contained. Clothes may need to go in a drawer, and cutlery may need an organizer. Next, find a place near where you most often use this item. If you typically use your laptop in the living room, don’t store it in the office.

Once you’ve found a home for this item, clean the space thoroughly. Give your item a good wipe down too to make sure you’re not putting back something dirty.

Whether you are new or experienced in the KonMari method, hopefully, this will help you not only give your home a great spring clean but also help you determine which items spark joy for you.
