What does a cancer survivor look like? For 50 yrs old Kazakistan resident Sanzhar Kim, not only did he survive a deadly form of brain tumour, but today he shares his story of survivorship. When Sanzhar’s ears started to bleed, an endocrinologist sent him to get an MRI and CT scan. Doctors diagnosed Sanzhar with a brain tumour and sent him for advanced neurosurgical care. Further test results confirmed that Sanzhar had a small tumour on the Cerebellum that was preventing him draining brain fluid properly. The tumour was putting him in grave danger, and he needed brain tumour treatment urgently. The surgeon explained “Gamma knife is a tool that allows us to deliver focused radiation to a number of abnormalities or lesions in the brain,” With the evolution of the icon a mask based treatment we could treat some of these larger areas much more safely, and yet still deliver a relatively high dose in order to best control the tumor. The goal was to stop things in their tracks and hopefully even get some shrinkage back over time. We had a better than 95% chance of doing this in Sanzhar’s situation.”
