Vipassana Meditation changed my life..!

Vipassana Meditation changed my life

Going to Vipassana Meditation center early this year; was one of the best decisions and life changing experience for me.

Vipassana is known to be the oldest Buddhist meditation technique. And can be translated as insight meditation. Or to see things in their original form with no judgement or bias of mind. The technique is one of the deepest of all meditation. That can heal the deeper layers of the subconscious mind by consistent meditation sessions.

The four major tool of this meditation technique are –

1) Focus on Natural Breath

2) Technique of Ana Pana (Basic breath awareness practice)

3) One pointed awareness

4) Observe the mind without any association with Rag & Dwesh (attachment & detachment)

How Vipassana has helped me?

The 10 days course of this meditation has helped me to become the observer of my inner world and feelings. But most importantly my thoughts, as Vipassana is a journey of self-exploration and is about a deep interconnection between mind and body. Which comes through disciplinary attention to physical sensations.

The training of Vipassana Meditation is about observing the thoughts without judging. But, one must completely surrender to the meditation practice at the center with no communication, no gadgets and no books. While maintaining noble silence throughout the course.

My experience and understanding

The meditation technique has helped me understand, that, our brain continues its old habit; always thinking of the past or the future. While our aim is to bring the wandering mind to the present, for which we must accept the truth.

As our mind continues to think, we must never try to push away the thoughts. At the same time, we must not let the mind continue to roll in thoughts. All we have to do is first accept; then let the thoughts remain there as some noise (like  loud music being played outside). We do hear that music, but we are not listening to that sound. That loudspeaker is belching out music, still we continue to focus on our work. As its only background noise.

Similarly, our thoughts should be treated as background noise. But sometimes it’s not easy and then we should bring our attention to the entrance of the nostrils. So that we can observe our natural breath, the practice of ana pana.  But this is also not possible sometimes and we should  focus on intentional breathing for 10-15 minutes. This helps in is engaging the mind. Thus, changing the habitual pattern of mind, by bringing the focus to the breathing. While training our mind to be in the present.

Final thoughts

This meditation course of ten day has transformed me to be an observer of my thoughts. And being aware of my breathing through my physical sensation to help me stay calm, relaxed. Thereby, not letting my mind get agitated, reactive or stressed as it used to be. This awareness or state of mind can be achieved only with regular practice as taught at the Vipassana centers.

Lots of Love,

Kannu
