Meditation has been advocated for in alternative medicine for many years. Besides, there are several studies demonstrating that it can cause positive physical and psychological changes.

Meditative Practices in Psychotherapy

The systematic method of regulating attention known as meditation is now being incorporated into psycho-therapeutic Practice. And linked in surprising ways to other healing traditions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Practitioners use a mantra or breath to be more mindful. If their mind wanders, they are supposed to observe the process without trying to disengage from it.  The aim is to suspend habits of selecting, judging and interpreting. While being aware of the present moment; without allowing oneself to be distracted by fantasies, memories and anxieties.

Studies show mindful meditations increase activity on the left side of the prefrontal cortex. Which is associated with joyful and serene emotions.

The purpose of cognitive behavioral therapy is to change self-defeating ways of thinking about the world, the self and the future.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy helps one be aware of their thoughts and bodily sensations. Which in turn helps them cope better with their emotions and challenges. The main tools it uses  are breath awareness and body scanning.

Lastly, meditation and psychotherapy are compatible. In fact, a lot of therapists recommend mindful exercises, mindfulness meditation to help establish healthy thinking patterns.
