Many who talk vs Few who do

Post indepenedence, every citizen is entitled to education. And 70 years later, we are still struggling with education in India. We have conventions, debates, campaigns and Fullstop. All talk, but no show. So many people talking and only a few doing..

The Vidya story

Mrs. Rashmi Misra, founder and chairperson of Vidya foundation. She started teaching five girls in her home on the campus of IIT Delhi. Today, Vidya now offers programs in five major cities across India, in some of the poorest neighborhoods of Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai and Bangalore. They have made a difference in the lives of more than 220,000 families over 35 years.

Tete-a-Tete with Mrs. Rashmi Misra

How did Vidya happen?

India consists of the over-privileged and under-privileged. Near the IIT campus, I saw young girls taking care of babies. Whereas, they should be studying. On asking, the girls told me, “Education is only for boys, besides, who will teach us?” I taught them and so many more in these 35 years.

How did Vidya grow?

There are so many who talk vs. a few who do! We got the IIT Delhi amphitheatre to teach and the kids started rolling in. Besides, we have the best team at Vidya! What can I say…

What is Vidya about?

Educate-Empower-Transform! Not just the children, but we focus on dropouts and women too! Educate the mother and her whole family transforms. We believe in Joyful learning. Thus, we have sports, dance, Yoga and so many extra-curricular activities besides study. We want to empower every child, inturn India.

Tell us your most memorable moment

Sharing one: my maid started her own NGO. She put computers, vocational training coaches in her village near Mumbai! She calls me and tells me, “Even I am the chairman of my NGO and you are the patron.” It was empowering. If she can do it, anyone can!!

Your meeting with Total yoga

It was destined. We think on similar lines. Change is inclusive, as in, every person needs to contribute in one way or another. And Total yoga is just doing their bit!

Your experience in one sentence

An exhilirating journey of change.

Looking forward to

Karma Yogathon, on 17th February 2018 at Ub city (Bangalore). The event will help us get through around ten children’s education for a year. Every child can make a difference. So, every person attending will be the change maker.
