Jaw surgery is recommended when the existing problems within the jaw cannot be treated with orthodontic treatments. Jaw Surgery is ideally recommended for individuals who have a fully grown jaw. There are a few points that one needs to remember prior and post the operation and follow a set of instructions to ensure that the procedure yields the desired outcome.
Let’s discuss the things a jaw surgery candidate should do before and after the surgery.
Pre-surgery instructions
One week before the surgery
A week before the jaw surgery, multiple X-rays, and impressions of your jaw with the entire history of your case will be reviewed. Further, the Dental surgeons will discuss with you the various aspects of the surgery to ensure you are aware of what you should expect after the surgery.
24 hours before the surgery
Here is what you should keep in mind a day before the surgery
Avoid drinking or eating anything post-mid-night
Avoid using any medication unless the dental surgeons clear it
Do not wear any facial or eye make-up
You can shower and brush as usual on the day of the surgery
Post-surgery instructions
Diet
Although you will be able to open your mouth to some extent after the surgery, you will not be able to chew food for around 6-8 weeks. Further, in dental terminology, you will be on a swallowing diet, which means you can swallow certain foods without chewing. Liquid or blended food is allowed, such as ice cream, scrambled eggs, curd, cake, etc.
Weight
It is crucial to maintain your weight after the surgery, and thus, we recommend keeping a tab on your weight every 4-5 days post surgery.
Hygiene
Patient’s should brush their teeth using a fluoride toothpaste each day and rinse with a mouthwash. It is vital to understand that maintaining oral hygiene is your best shot at avoiding infections post-surgery
Activities
In the first week after the surgery, rest is highly recommended. Although you can resume your routine after a week, it is essential to avoid activities that are likely to cause injury to the face.
Medication
Use the medication as per the dosage recommended by your dental surgeon and painkillers only when required.
