Tips for Maintaining and Improving your Posture

Having good posture is a sign of confidence, beauty, and a healthy lifestyle. Not only is it more attractive than a slouched back but proper posture is also much more comfortable, healthier and extremely important. The American Chiropractic Association says that Good posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. There are many ideas and guidelines we can do for ourselves but to thoroughly help correct our posture it is best to visit with a chiropractor. It’s valuable to gain the expertise and assistance of a chiropractor to help maintain a neutral spine in support of improving posture.

People with poor posture are more likely to experience back pain and tackle injuries. On the bright side, we are able to correct bad posture. Here are some easy tips to help improve or keep up your good posture:

• Sitting up straight
• Keep your feet flat on the ground while sitting
• Change up your sitting positioning during long periods of sitting and take standing breaks
• Wear proper shoes and avoid wearing high heels for prolonged periods of time. Look into Custom Orthotics for extra support
• Search and invest in the proper mattress for your comfort every 5-7 years
•Use one pillow when you sleep. You can place a second pillow between your legs while sleeping on your side or under your knees while sleeping on your back. It is not recommended to sleep on your stomach
• Stand up straight with your shoulders back
• Consider wearing a posture support to prevent slumping and remind yourself to keep correct posture. Then slowly ease out of wearing it.
• Work out regularly to fuel your spine with healthy nutrients
• Always stretch before and after working out
• Be aware of your position, whether you are sitting, standing or lying down always be attentive to your positioning
Remember to book regular adjustments with your chiropractor
for adjustments to upkeep and correct spine alignment

What will a chiropractor do for my posture?

Start seeing your chiropractor for regular adjustments for a significant improvement in your posture. We visit our family doctors for regular check ups and it’s just as important to pay the same amount of attention and time with a chiropractor. They help to correct posture through chiropractic adjustments and help you to understand what issues are lying on your backside. Without properly understanding why we may feel stiff or what is causing the slouch it may not be possible to correct it on our own. When patients come to see Dr. Michael Rodney at the Madison Sports Injury and Rehabilitation Clinic, after an adjustment, he assigns a treatment plan where he may teach his patients stretches and/or exercises based on their condition in order to help them align their ligaments so they can continue to perform and feel better at home. A chiropractor can also recommend other doctors or specialists for further treatments such as physiotherapy, massage or even custom orthotics.

Remember maintaining good posture isn’t always easy. If you’d like to do more to fix your posture, it’s always encouraged to seek specialized care. Consider visiting the Madison Sports Injury Clinic, where all of our trained professionals are available to help in their field of specialty and will provide further tips and maintenance techniques to better your posture. The Madison Clinic is conveniently located in North York at the corner of Yonge and Sheppard and it’s only a few minutes walk from the TTC Sheppard-Yonge subway station.
