Maybe you’ve moved to a new area recently, started a new job, or been thinking about finding a Dentist who suits your current needs more for a while now, but you’re not sure what to look for when doing your research.  When selecting a new dentist, finding one who meets your needs and who you feel comfortable with is critical to your overall and dental health. Where to begin? Use the criteria below as a guide:

1. Know what type of dentist you’re looking for
Decide what you’re looking for before you look for a dentist. First ask yourself what you didn’t like about a previous dentist. Did you think the practice was too big? Too small? What about their billing methods, locations, hours, or emergency care? If you know what you’re looking for, it will help you narrow down some choices before you begin the research process. Make the decision that is right for you.

2. Look for a dentist with a good reputation
Obviously, one of the most important considerations when looking for the perfect dentist is his or her reputation. There are many ways to research dentists and their practice history. One of the easiest approaches is to search online for reviews. Websites, such as Angie’s List, Yelp, HealthGrades, or ZocDoc offer reviews from patients.
3. Check your state dental board
Dentists are held accountable by their state dental boards. Each state has a board of dentistry website that tracks the history of claims against a particular dentist. Make sure that the dentist you are about to see does not have any claims or charges on file; one claim may be an anomaly but several may be a negative sign.
4. Interview your dentist
In order to truly know if you and your new dentist are a good “match,” talk to them! You can interview potential new dentists by calling them and asking a few simple questions:  where the dentist studied, how long they’ve been practicing, and what type of treatment they offer. If you have any special issues like needing anxiety-free dentistry or replacing a crown, ask about those issues as well. Also, be sure to review their websites for additional FAQs.
5. Ask friends and family about their dentist
Finally, ask your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers about their dentists. What better way to find a dentist than by talking to actual patients! Most people will not recommend bad service to you or suggest you see a dentist they don’t like.
It is not an easy decision to choose a dentist that is right for you and your family. Don’t wait for an emergency – take the time to research and make the right choice.
