Eyelid Surgery: Is it Right for You and What to Expect

Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed how tired you look? Sometimes Eye makeup isn’t enough to cover the noticeable signs of aging in the eyelids. If your eyes feel heavy, and you’re noticing bags below your eyes, it may be time to consider a blepharoplasty, also known as Eyelid surgery.

A blepharoplasty not only helps you look younger, but it can also allow your eyes to function properly. Part of feeling more tired than usual is the excess skin on your eyelids that affects your peripheral vision. This causes your eyes to work harder and become more tired more quickly. The good news is, if droopy eyes are affecting your vision, a blepharoplasty may become a medically necessary procedure. If an upper lid blepharoplasty becomes necessary, it could be covered by your insurance company. With a blepharoplasty, you can leave the plastic surgery center looking better and feeling more alert.

What types of eyelid procedures are there?

In a blepharoplasty, a patient’s levator muscle in the eyelid is lifted so it no longer covers any part of the pupil. This procedure helps tighten the sagging skin above, around and under the eyes.

How long will it take to recover?

If you undergo a blepharoplasty, your surgeon made small incisions in your eyelid to perform the procedure. After the operation, you can expect your eyelids to feel tight and sore, and your eyes may feel watery, dry, itchy or sensitive to light. If your stitches don’t dissolve on their own, your surgeon will remove them three to five days after surgery. Your eyelids may be swollen or bruised for up to three weeks. Most patients feel ready to go back to work between 10 and 14 days. We recommend avoiding strenuous and heavy exercise until you have your follow-up appointment with your surgeon. We also recommend checking with your doctor to make sure it is okay for you to drive and keeping reading and computer activity to a minimum. Finally, we recommend getting some rest. The more sleep you get, the quicker your eyes will recover.
