National Diabetes Month: Take charge of your health!

Detect. Treat. Prevent.

November is National Diabetes Month. Use it as an opportunity to take charge of your health!

Did you know that a routine dental checkup can be used to detect diabetes? In fact, your dentist can uncover numerous diseases that affect your overall health early enough to nip in the bud, before major complications happen.

People with diabetes are especially vulnerable to oral-systemic health concerns like Gum Disease, kidney disease and even stroke. In fact, gum disease is the most common problem among diabetics.

Healthy gums keep chronic disease at bay.

Keeping your gums healthy is a key way to prevent chronic disease. And what better place to do that than your dentist’s office?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “The sooner you find out [you have diabetes], the sooner you can start making healthy changes that will benefit you now and in the future.”

If you suffer from diabetes, DentaQuest recommends the following oral care practices to manage your increased risk for gum disease:

  1. Brush at least every morning and evening with fluoride toothpaste. Ideally, you should brush after every meal and snack.
  2. Floss once a minimum of once a day to remove gum-damaging plaque that your toothbrush can’t reach.
  3. Get dental cleanings every six months.

Want to learn more about the connection between oral health and overall health? Your dentist should have informative brochures available like  Bright Smiles™ Brochure: Gum Disease Connection and at-a-glance information cards like the Diabetes Alert 4-up Laser Card. And if they don’t, send them to smartpractice.com/dental or have them call us at 800.522.0800 so you and other patients stay informed.

Your mouth really is a gateway to your health. Are you doing all you can to take care of it? Are you visiting the dentist as often if you should, and if not, why? Let us know in the comments!
