STD Briefs – Donovanosis Symptoms,Test, & Treatment

Donovanosis STD Brief

Today’s post and posts to follow will consist of The STD Project’s Std Briefs. These briefs are intended to give readers (specifically those readers who weren’t aware many of these STDs existed) an overview of each STD, their commonality, treatment options, and diagnostic tests available.

This information is, by no means, all-encompassing, and The STD Project encourages using these briefs as primers and then further delving into the resources section when subsequent questions arise.

Donovanosis Symptoms, Test & Treatment

Donovanosis
Common? Rare – about 100 cases reported per year in the US
Symptoms Beefy, red ulcers that bleed easily to the touch – can be easily mistaken for Chancroid or LGV
Cure? Antiobiotics
Bacterial/Viral/Fungal/Parasitic Bacterial
Test A culture of the tissue, but the bacteria is often hard to locate, or a biopsy of the lesion and a smear, but again, it is often hard to locate the bacteria. Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAAT) tests, only available in research laboratories, have the highest reliability.
