Hepatitis C Treatment in India- Boon for Un-Insured Americans

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is an infection of liver and is caused by Hepatitis C virus. It is a deadly disease in which the causative virus is carried from the blood stream to the liver and leads to inflammation of the liver.

It can be transmitted sexually or through blood of an infected person to the blood of a healthy person. In fact, just a drop of blood infected with the virus can cause Hepatitis C.

Almost 80% of the patients with Hepatitis C infection remain asymptomatic in acute stage while the remaining may show symptoms like jaundice (yellowish discoloration of skin and the whites of the eyes), abdominal pain, dark urine, grey-colored faeces, fever, fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting.

But when the infection becomes chronic; it results in scarring of liver and can also lead to liver cirrhosis, fatty liver or liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).

Hepatitis C is found worldwide and according to recent reports by WHO; more than 220 million people are currently infected from Hepatitis C virus. Due to the ever increasing count of infected persons and the high price of Treatment, it has become a hot research topic.

But recently the apex committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has given a waiver to the new direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs (sofosbuvir and daclastavir) that is an effective treatment for Hepatitis C.

The waiver is that these drugs can be made available to the general population without local trials. This had opened doors to bring the generic version of these drugs in India at a very low cost as compared to their cost in western countries.

This has made Hep C treatmentin India much cost effective than anywhere else in the world.

The new direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs (sofosbuvir and daclastavir) act as a highly efficient regimen that is effective against all genotypes of the virus (pan-genotypic), even in difficult-to-cure Hepatitis C patients.

Although the production cost of DAAs is low, but it costs over $90,000 in the US and over 50,000 euros in the EU. That is a huge cost especially for those Hepatitis C patients that are not insured.

But the availability of generic versions of this pan-genotypic directly acting anti-viral (DAA) combination in India can be a boon for these uninsured patients as it costs about Rs 75,000 or about $1,200 or even less in India, just 1% of what the treatment cost in U.S. In fact even if the total cost of trip is calculated then also it won't come anyway near to US$90,000.
