Speed Reading Tips for Kindle Oasis and Kindle Paperwhite E-readers

Another amazing Book, the pile on my desk is getting bigger and bigger. The stack of books itself is intimidating, let alone the volume of words that I need to read. Unread books clutter my desk, closet, and even spill over into the garage.
I chose the profession of a teacher/speaker and one of my mentors Zig Ziglar stated if you are going to teach you have to read, and read a lot. Zig was known to read three hours a day every day. He felt he was a teacher and this was necessary to teach.
I couldn’t get my mind into it. As much as I tried I wasn’t into reading. My mind would go blank, and I would forget sentences and even whole chapters which led to massive frustration.
Then one day I was in a Barnes and Nobles, and I was walking by the front area where I saw a book called Evelyn Wood’s Speed Reading. I grabbed it and headed home to devoured it.
Thanks to this little book, I had a plan for reading faster. Something else happened as I learned to read faster, it became enjoyable to read again. I was slow at first, but once I learned I needed to retrain my brain on how to read, I was off to the races.
I now read or listen to 3-6 books a month, that is about 250 books a year. At that pace, the stacks vanished off my desk, bookshelves, and the garage. I have since moved 80% of my reading to Amazon’s Kindle E-readers, this has made the task of carrying books with me disappear.
I have gotten faster and faster over the years, and I wanted to take the time to show you how to clear that stack off of the desk and how to read much faster
Here are some speed reading tips:

  1. Don’t verbalize the words.
  2. We were taught to read wrong. Yes, you should not read the words as you read. Your brain can work much faster than verbalization. This is why your mind wanders. The faster you go the more engaged you will be.
  3. If you have issues with this, start by sounding every third word.
  4. Use finger for pacing
  5. The finger can be used to pace the words and keep you focused to where you are at on the page. Once you get good enough you won’t have to use the pace finger, but this helps increase speed.
  6. Eliminate distractions
  7. It is critical you read in a distraction-free zone. Focus and you will be amazing at how heated the mind gets when you read faster.
  8. Read fiction
  9. For years I read that I couldn’t afford to read fiction. Thinking my mind needed knowledge. This was true, but what I didn’t know is sticking only with non-fiction it killed my reading speed. Not only is fiction entertaining it serves the purpose of speeding you up.
  10. Practice every day (read every day)
With the E-readers, iPhones, iPads there is no reason not to read all day. Speed reading is a skill, like anything else with more practice you will get better.

These 5-speed reading tips with get you moving faster through the things you need to read. Remember, it may take some time at first. You were taught wrong, so give it time as you reverse this teaching. Be patient, practice, and watch your reading speed go off the charts.
