Health Metrics

The Fitbit app’s Health Metrics section allows you to observe patterns and evaluate changes over time by monitoring important measurements recorded by your Fitbit device. These markers include:

Breathing Rate
Generally, a healthy breathing rate falls within the range of 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Monitoring your average breathing rate during sleep serves as a useful indicator of overall well-being. Typically, this rate remains relatively consistent from one night to another. Various factors, such as age, sex, weight, lung and heart conditions, anxiety, and fever, can influence an individual’s breathing rate.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
refers to the fluctuation in the duration between heartbeats. The timing of each heartbeat is determined by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). To assess HRV, we utilize the widely used RMSSD formula, which analyzes heart rate data. HRV levels vary among individuals and can be influenced by various factors such as hormones, circadian rhythm, and other variables including breathing rate, caffeine or alcohol consumption, exercise, and stress. Research indicates a positive correlation between higher HRV and improved health. Conversely, a significant decline in HRV may suggest that the body is experiencing stress, strain, or potential signs of illness.

Skin temperature variation during sleep is measured by monitoring the changes in temperature on your wrist. Unlike core temperature, which is the temperature inside your body usually measured using a thermometer, skin temperature refers to the temperature on the surface of your skin. It’s normal for skin temperature to fluctuate during sleep and from one night to another. Various factors can contribute to these nightly variations, including fluctuations in room temperature, bedding, circadian rhythm, menstrual cycle, and even the possibility of developing a fever. Please note that significant changes in ambient temperature can have a negative impact on accurate skin temperature tracking.

Oxygen saturation (SpO2)
is a metric used to estimate the oxygen levels in your blood. During sleep, nighttime SpO2 is typically lower than daytime SpO2 due to the slower breathing rate. Generally, SpO2 values above 90% are common during sleep. Monitoring SpO2 can enhance your awareness of oxygen saturation patterns while you sleep. It’s important to remember that oxygen levels in your blood usually remain relatively stable, even during exercise and sleep. To collect SpO2 data, you can install an SpO2 clock face (available on Sense, Versa, Versa Lite Edition, Versa 2, and Versa 3) or the SpO2 app (available on Charge 4, Charge 5, Charge 6, Luxe, Sense, Sense 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4).

Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
is the frequency at which your heart beats per minute when you are calm and fully rested. Typically, the resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), although this range can vary depending on factors such as age and fitness level. Your resting heart rate can serve as an important indicator of your overall cardiovascular health and fitness level. Generally, individuals who engage in regular physical activity tend to have a lower resting heart rate. Numerous factors can influence your resting heart rate. Stress, alcohol or caffeine consumption, and fever tend to elevate your resting heart rate, while exercise or meditation can help reduce it. Additionally, air temperature and certain medications may also impact your heart rate.

Sleep Score & Details

The sleep score provides insights into your nightly rest, allowing you to identify patterns in your sleep behavior. Research indicates that obtaining sufficient and refreshing sleep can have a positive impact on your energy levels, physical activity, emotional well-being, weight management, and other aspects (source).

The comprehensive sleep score is determined by factors such as heart rate, duration of wakefulness or restlessness, and the different stages of sleep. It does not specifically consider breathing rate.

Sleep Profile

Working alongside ethnographers and animal specialists, the team collaborated to identify suitable animals for each sleep type (including their corresponding visual representations). After careful consideration, they finalized a lineup consisting of the bear, dolphin, hedgehog, giraffe, parrot, and tortoise.

The analysis for the Sleep Profile came from various sleep characteristics such as the likelihood of waking up within the first hour of sleep, sleep cycle duration, consistency of wake-up times, and disparities in bedtime between weekends and weekdays.

Stress Management Score & Details

The stress management score on the Fitbit app offers insights into your body’s stress response through heart rate, sleep, and activity data. By reflecting on your stress levels, you can identify connections between your score and how you feel.

Deep breathing, a popular meditation technique, aids in stress release and promotes a calm mental state. Studies indicate that setting aside a few minutes daily for relaxation can decrease blood pressure and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Mindfulness Sessions

Fitbit Premium users can now access an expanded library of meditation and mindfulness content, including an exclusive series of 28 sessions led by renowned meditation expert and doctor, Deepak Chopra. This series called the “Mindful Method,” is part of Fitbit’s efforts to promote mindfulness and meditation.

Fitbit Premium users can easily find this content on the app’s home screen by scrolling down and tapping on the “Track your mindfulness” subsection. This enhancement aligns with Fitbit’s commitment to providing premium experiences for its users.

Videos for Workouts and Mindful Sessions

Fitbit Premium offers a wide range of over 200 video-led sweat sessions. These sessions vary in intensity, type (including yoga and weight training), equipment used, and focus (such as abs-only workouts or cardio dance parties). Additionally, there are more than 100 mindfulness videos available that cover various topics like stress relief, happiness promotion, and better sleep.

In addition to the extensive video library, Fitbit Premium provides guided programs designed to help you achieve specific goals. Whether it’s improving your sleep duration, mastering push-ups, or enhancing your nutrition through mindful eating and reducing sugar intake, these programs offer comprehensive weekly plans to keep you on track.

Safety Signal

Safety Signal is a subscription service available with a Fitbit Premium Membership with a Google Pixel Watch. It offers LTE connectivity from Google, enabling the use of safety features. With Safety Signal, you can make emergency calls when you’re away from your phone and don’t have a carrier plan on your Watch.

If you already have carrier services on your Watch, Safety Signal will not be accessible as your carrier service provides the necessary connection when you’re away from your phone.

By subscribing to Safety Signal, you gain connectivity for various safety features on your Watch, including calls to and from emergency contacts, Safety Checks, Emergency Sharing, Emergency SOS, and Fall Detection.
