The IFBB pro delivered an impressive performance in Reno, Nevada.
Six months after suffering a horrific setback that could have easily sidelined him for the remainder of the competitive season, Charles Griffen showed the power of perseverance by completing his comeback story in championship style.
On Sunday, October 8, 2023, Griffen has officially secured a qualifying spot Mr. Olympia competition 2023 by topping the rest of the Men’s Open division at the 2023 Legion Sports Fest Pro in Reno, Nevada.
With the Mr. Olympia competition – the biggest bodybuilding show of the year – scheduled for November 2-5, Legion Sports Fest Pro offered hopeful contestants the opportunity to secure some of the final spots in the lineup.
Griffen not only ensured that he was able to forget the memories of a 14th place at the World Championships Olympics 2022but he did so despite struggling with the effects of a serious injury sustained during one Chest training session earlier this year.
The Minnesota native caused a stir on social media back in April 2023 with a video in which he showed how everything can change in a split second when it comes to heavy weights. Griffen’s Instagram post showed him injuring his left pectoral muscle while preparing for an attack Incline dumbbell press with a pair of dumbbells weighing 77 kilograms.
Even after suffering a potentially career-threatening injury, he did not undergo surgery to repair the Grade II tear. Although Griffen had a four to six week recovery period after the partial tendon tear, he did not let the mishap weaken him either physically or mentally. Instead, the injury set the stage for a furious comeback that culminated in a decisive victory with Olympic implications.
What made his first-place finish at the Legion Sports Fest Pro even more impressive was the fact that, despite a visible torn pectoral muscle, he received a unanimous seal of approval from the judges. In a sport that places emphasis on muscle density as well as symmetryGriffen’s win spoke volumes about his overall physique and top-notch conditioning.
Ultimately, his monstrous quadriceps, well developed backand his bulging biceps set him apart from the rest of a crowded field that included John Jewett, who will join Griffen at the 2023 Olympics Orlando, FL to survive in competition 212 Division. Jewett’s performance in Reno certainly turned heads as he finished in a unanimous second place finish in his Men’s Open debut.
Although it seemed like Griffen’s win would add some finality to the Olympic lineup, that wasn’t necessarily the case. Less than 24 hours after Griffen secured the final qualifying spot, Brett “The Butcher” Wilkin officially withdrew from the 2023 Mr. Olympia due to recent digestive issues that resulted in significant and unexpected weight loss.

Griffen faces an arduous road to finish ahead of some big-name competitors with great physiques. With top contenders like 2022 Men’s Open runner-up Derek Lunsford, 2023 Arnold Classic As winner Samson Dauda and 2019 Mr. Olympia Brandon Curry all vie to defeat reigning champion Hadi Choopan, it will be fascinating to see where Griffen ends up after a 14th-place finish a year ago and his Olympic debut in 13th place. ranked in 2018.
On the other hand, the three-time IFBB Pro League champion has already shown that he is capable of winning a tough battle, despite all the adversity he has had to overcome in 2023.
