My keto enjoy

It’s the undisputed Diet trend of 2018, and if you love it, you LOVE it. If not, you’ll probably just tune out your girlfriend when she talks about it (because we all have that one Keto friend, haha)

I recently conducted a little experiment for our WTF Wellness series on YouTube. I tried keto for TWO WEEKS (Ryan too!)! If you know me at all, you know that diets aren’t really my thing. But I was super surprised at how I felt, the results I saw, and how much I wouldn’t recommend it. A little bit confused? Would you rather watch the video?? Here is my complete keto experience

Read on to get the lowdown on this crazy diet fad that apparently means nothing in 2019.

The keto diet is basically a low-carb, high-fat diet. After a few days of carb restriction, your body’s metabolism enters a state called “ketosis,” hence the name.

Essentially, when you put your body into a state of ketosis, your Body Burns Fat very efficiently for energy and helps your liver convert fat into chemical compounds called ketones that can fuel your brain. Double yes! The moral of the story: Your body burns fat very efficiently instead of carbohydrates for energy, which means you are burning your body fat reserves. Sounds good, right?

I’ll save my hot takes for the video, but here are the “rules” of keto eating. You want to avoid grains, sugar, legumes, rice, potatoes, sweets, juice, and even most fruits.

Your shopping cart should instead be filled with…

  • Vegetables: Not all vegetables are created equal, so it’s important to choose low-carb vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, peppers, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, and asparagus. You know I’m crazy about avocados and they’ve definitely made the keto diet okay.
  • Fruits: Most fruits are off-limits because sugars (even naturally occurring ones) are carbohydrates. Raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries are all low in carbs, making them the perfect sweet treat for you.
  • Meat and Fish: Stick with grass-fed beef, chicken, tuna, salmon and bone broth.
  • Dairy products and eggs: Almond, coconut or hemp milk are a better alternative to milk as dairy products contain a good amount of carbohydrates. Indulge in lots of fatty cheeses, eggs, and Greek yogurt (which is a good alternative to sour cream).

So basically, keto is a little similar to the Atkins diet from the 2000s and other low-carb diets that were popular in the past. Have you tried the keto diet? Comment below with your thoughts/questions/experiences. I want to hear everything.
