The legends and blessings associated with Khatu Shyamji Mandir Sikar had always captivated me, but my busy schedule held me constantly. They say we visit a shrine only when the “supreme power” beckons us. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit this sacred place with my family.

Here, I share my account of this meaningful experience—the mythological folklore of Shree Shyam Mandir at Khatoo. Who is Barbarik or Khatu Shyam?

Barbarik, also known and revered as Khatu shyam Ji, Baliyadev, God Kamrunag, King Yalamber, Akash Bhairav, and more. He is a contemporary avatar and a divine guardian figure in Hinduism. His tale is found in the Skanda Purana, the primary source of many legends.

According to legend, he is believed to be the grandson of Bhima, the formidable Pandava. Born to Ghatotkacha and Princess Maurvi, who was the daughter of Daitya Moora.  In his childhood, Barbarika was affectionately referred to as “Barbarika” by his mother and relatives. He was bestowed with the name “Shyam” by Lord Shri Krishna.

Barbarik is often regarded as one of the most formidable warriors in the Mahabharata. He was believed to have the power to end the war within a minute. This is why Lord Krishna requests his head as a charitable offering, ensuring that Barbarik does not participate in the battle.

The Barbarik Tale: Mahabharata in Folklore

Before the onset of the Mahabharata War, Lord Krishna posed a question to all the renowned warriors. Inquiring about the estimated duration to conclude the battle. Bhishma, Dronacharya, Karna, and Arjuna estimated 20, 25, 24, and 28 days, respectively, to complete the war.

Intrigued, Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, sought the same response from Barbarik. His astonishing reply was that he could conclude the war in a mere 1 minute.

When Krishna inquired about the method, Barbarik explained his unique approach. He possessed three arrows. The first to mark objects for destruction, the second to indicate preservation. And the third to annihilate unmarked entities, returning to his quiver.

Shri Krishna took his test and recognized Barbarik’s exceptional valor. When questioned about his allegiance in the war, Barbarik intended to support the weaker side as per his promise to his mother. The Lord requested Barbraik’s head in charity to sanctify the battlefield.

Barbarik agreed but had one condition: he wished to witness the battle. Krishna accepted and positioned his head atop a hill to witness the war as it unfolds. This event took place on the 12th day of the bright half of the Phalgun month.

The Battle’s Verdict: Barbarika’s Revelation

After the end of Mahabharata’s war, the Pandavas debated the true winner. When consulted- Barbarika, the eyewitness, revealed two pivotal observations. He witnessed a divine chakra annihilating the foes of righteousness. And Draupadi as Goddess Mahakali, extending her tongue across the battlefield to consume sinners. Barbarika’s account highlights the supernatural forces in determining the battle’s outcome.

Today, the shrine of Khatu Shyamji or Sheesh Ke Daani (Donor of Head) in Rajasthan is where we worship Barbarik’s head.

The Legendary Battle of Barbarik and Bhima during Exile

During their exile, the Pandavas encountered Barbarik, who was deeply devoted to goddesses. Unaware of each other’s identities, a conflict erupted when Barbarik was angered by Bhima’s use of a holy pond for washing. As the battle unfolded, Bhima held his ground but soon grew tired.

Due to divine intervention, barbaric attempted to throw Bhima into the sea, unnoticed by the Pandavas. Lord Shiva then revealed Bhima’s true identity as Barbarik’s grandfather. This lead to Barbarik’s remorse and ultimately Bhima’s forgiving him.

Overwhelmed by guilt, Barbaric attempted suicide by plunging into the sea but was saved by the goddesses. Lord Shiva assured him that his actions were not sinful due to ignorance. Bhima, moved by this, erected a radiant Linga called Bhimeshvara, where Lord Shiva released Barbarik.

After seven days, the Pandavas left the area. The family reunion through divine intervention.

This legend highlights Khatu Shyamji’s might and grace. Though he effortlessly overpowered Bhima, he did not punish or destroy him. Instead, Khatu Shyamji granted him a boon, demonstrating his merciful nature. For devotees, this story reinforces Khatu Shyamji’s ability to protect them from harm and shower them with blessings.

Why Lord Krishna Killed the Great Warrior Barbarik

In his previous birth, Barbarik was a Yaksha who unintentionally insulted the gods. In response, Lord Brahma cursed him, foretelling his demise at the hands of Krishna in a future battle.

your physical form will indeed meet its end”

Barbaric pleaded with Lord Vishnu. If he was going to die this way, he asked for a life that could help people get their wishes fulfilled. Lord Vishnu agreed in the divine assembly. Stating that people would revere his head. And he would be honoured by goddesses.

Thus, Barbaric received this unique blessing due to Lord Brahma’s curse. Shri Krishna then blessed Khatu Shyamji’s immortal spirit and established a temple in his name in Rajasthan. There, he is revered as a divine protector and helper of needy people. By slaying Khatu Shyamji, Krishna had ensured his mighty devotee’s powers were only used to serve the good.

After the Mahabharata war, Lord Shri Krishna submerged Barbarika’s head in the Roopavati River. In Kali Yuga, the ruler of Khattu village received a dream, leading to the establishing of the Khatu Shyam Temple during Phalgun month. On the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha, Khatu Shyam Baba was enshrined in this temple. This revered temple is believed to fulfil the desires of devotees, with Shri Krishna manifesting as Khatu Shyam Ji to grant their wishes.

To have wishes fulfilled, pilgrims walk barefoot for about 17 kms from Ringas to Khatu. They carry a triangular cloth flag, called Nishan, which symbolizes devotion and grants blessings.

The temple’s most significant festival is the Phalguna Mela, celebrated approximately 8 to 9 days before the Holi festival. The grand temple and annual fair celebrate the birth and victory of Khatu Shyam ji, who overcame great challenges to become a figure of strength, courage and devotion.

The divine power of Mandir is especially more during the annual Phalguni Mela festival . Thousands of pilgrims flock to the temple. The Phalguni Mela, held in February or March, honors Khatu Shyamji’s victory over the demon Bhaymarak.
