How Do You Eat to Quiet Your Mind?

“Dear Tricia,

I’m an emotional eater. I’m convinced my situation would improve if only my head wasn’t spinning a hundred miles a minute. I can’t turn it off. I find that the only time I have a respite is when I’m zoning out in front of the TV with a bag of chips or cookies. There’s got to be a better way. Any suggestions?“ ~ From Spinning in Spokane.

Dear Spinning in Spokane

Every emotional eater has a racing mind.

It’s really a part of the condition we suffer from. I know all about it. Chips and cookies is one way to go. Another way is to begin trying things that can help you to de-stress.

Meditation is one of the best things you can do. I understand your objection: “Hey, I can’t meditate with a mind like this. I can’t stop my mind from spinning, so I can’t find any peace in meditation.”

Meditation is something you can do whether your head is spinning or not.

If your head is spinning, it’s okay. The issue is that you are judging yourself. You’re judging your efforts to slow down. You’re judging your efforts to be quiet. You’re judging your head. If you could sit down and be quiet, which is pretty much what meditation really is; even though your head is still spinning, it might just stop spinning quite so fast. It’s going to slow down. Even if spinning goes from 50,000 miles a minute to 10,000 miles a minute; that’s improvement.

If meditation seems too tough, lie down on the bed for 10-20 minutes instead. It’s going to give you a reprieve from that racing mind. I don’t mean that you need to sleep away spinning. Indeed, you still must live your life, but anything you can do to stop to take care of you in a very nurturing, self-caring way is going to improve the situation.

There are many ways to meditate. 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now teaches you how to slow down and meditate. When you can nurture your body and your mind you can begin to break free from your racing head.
