Xeomin vs. Botox: Which is Best for You?

As we get older, we naturally develop fine lines and wrinkles on our faces. These wrinkles can develop in two ways: either due to loss of facial volume or sun damage, called “static wrinkles”, or from repetitive muscle contractions, called “dynamic wrinkles”. Dynamic wrinkles appear around the eyes as “crow’s feet”, which can develop after we squint repeatedly while smiling, around the mouth, called “smile lines”, and in the glabellar area, called are lines that form folds on the forehead and between the eyes. All of these lines are completely natural but can still reflect signs of aging and many people want to get rid of these lines.

Fortunately, there are many non-invasive treatments, like botulinum toxin A injections, that don’t require a visit to a plastic surgeon. Xeomin and Botox are all injectable products that contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin that is used to treat medical conditions related to muscle spasms and to eliminate wrinkles and fine lines as part of the fight against the natural aging process. These neurotoxins are extremely effective but have a slightly different composition and can treat slightly different conditions. However, you may wonder which aesthetic treatment option is best for you? Xeomin or Botox?

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is an injectable treatment derived from another type A botulinum toxin called incobotulinumtoxinA. Manufactured by the company Merz Pharmaceuticals, Xeomin was first approved for cosmetic purposes in 2010. When used for cosmetic purposes, this neurotoxin is best used to treat lines of Forehead wrinkles (called glabellar lines), frown lines and crow’s feet. Xeomin has also received FDA approval to treat excessive drooling, along with other conditions, such as blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. Xeomin differs from other forms of botulinum toxin A because it does not contain a preservative protein. This means it is a pure form of neurotoxin, which does not cause the body to produce antibodies. As a result, the body does not become resistant to treatment over time.

What is Botox?

Botox is one of the most popular non-invasive injectable treatments in the United States. It is highly regarded for its use as a cosmetic treatment to erase the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face and can also be used on its own to treat certain conditions such as chronic migraine, excessive underarm sweating and hyperactive bladder. Botox is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA, which is a form of botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by a species of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Manufactured by the company Allergan, Botox was first approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to treat certain medical conditions in 1985 and approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

How do Xeomin and Botox Work?

Both Xeomin and Botox contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and each treatment relaxes muscles in the same way. When injected into a muscle, neurotoxins such as botulinum toxin A block neurotransmitters at the injection site, signaling the muscle to contract. As a result, the muscle “freezes”, meaning it relaxes and becomes inactive. Aesthetically, when a neuromodulator is injected, it reduces the appearance of wrinkles by smoothing the skin’s surface. These anti-aging effects are characteristic of Xeomin and Botox.

Specifically, both are extremely adept at treating “dynamic wrinkles”, which are wrinkles caused by muscle contractions such as frown lines, smile lines around the eyes (crow’s feet) and mouth, or frown lines. The muscle-relaxing properties of the treatments are also important for treating medical conditions such as blepharospasm, which occurs when the eyes contract involuntarily, and cervical dystonia, which occurs when the muscles The neck works unevenly. For both conditions, blocking neurotransmitters and relaxing muscles will reduce symptoms of these conditions.

What is The Difference Between Xeomin and Botox?

While there are a lot of similarities in the way Xeomin works as a muscle relaxer, there are also a few key differences that determine which treatment is best for a wide range of conditions. The first major difference is the presence of accessory proteins in Botox, which act as preservatives. Xeomin does not contain this protein and is instead a more concentrated, or “pure,” form of this neurotoxin. Botox’s additives cause the body to make antibodies that fight off the effects of the treatment over time. Because Xeomin contains only 150 kD of this neurotoxin, it does not trigger the formation of antibodies, meaning the treatment can work even if your body has developed resistance to Botox.

Does Xeomin Work Faster Than Botox?

Both Xeomin and Botox are extremely effective treatments for various medical conditions and for eliminating facial lines and wrinkles. Research published by the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery found that both treatments produced similar results four months after injection. That said, Xeomin has been shown to deliver faster results than Botox, largely due to the formulation of each treatment. Botox contains accessory proteins as an inactive ingredient that acts as a preservative. Thus, the body must break down proteins before the effects of Botox can be seen. Xeomin is a purer form of the neurotoxin, which means the active ingredients can work immediately and effects appear after just a few days (about 5) instead of 7 to 14 days after treatment with Botox. So, although both Botox and Xeomin are extremely effective as anti-aging treatments, Xeomin works faster than Botox.

Is Xeomin More Economical Than Botox?

Overall, Xeomin tends to be more economical than Botox at our Dallas medical spa. Xeomin offers Xperience+, a loyalty program that offers up to $50 off your Xeomin procedures for qualifying treatments. The cost of Xeomin is partially calculated based off of how many units of the injection you require for treatment or areas which need treatment.

What is The Aftercare for Xeomin and Botox?

Xeomin and Botox are non-invasive procedures so there is no recovery or downtime required. After treatment, you can return to normal activities. We recommend that you do not lie down on the treatment area and avoid massaging the injection area after treatment. This is to further minimize the risk of the neurotoxin spreading to other parts of your body. However, you can wash your face and apply makeup directly after treatment if you want. With outstanding results and no downtime, Xeomin and Botox are great options for patients who are less interested in invasive procedures such as cosmetic surgery for anti-aging treatments.
