5 other causes of dark circles

In the article 5 Causes of dark circles we have already learned about common causes. However, these are far from being the only ones. Therefore I want to mention five other reasons that can at least contribute to the development of dark circles or make them worse.

Iron deficiency

Iron is very important for the body to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that roughly speaking transports oxygen in the Blood and through the body. When the hemoglobin content of the blood is too low, it is called anemia. On the one hand, this leads to a paleness of the skin, which is why underlying blood vessels may be more visible. On the other hand, the area around the eyes is also less supplied with oxygen.

Women are particularly affected by this during menstruation (blood loss) and during pregnancy, when iron requirements increase. An iron deficiency can be diagnosed by means of a blood test by determining the ferritin value.

In an Indian study on causes of dark circles, 50% of all subjects had an iron deficiency. This is more than the average of the population. A connection between iron deficiency and dark circles is therefore not surprising.

A lot of computer work

Anyone who works a lot on a computer or spends a lot of time in front of a screen in general will probably know the feeling when the eyes get tired at some point. Screen work is exhausting for the eyes and they need to be supplied with more nutrients. This can cause the blood vessels around the eyes to enlarge and shine more through the skin.

I have already addressed another point in the article What to do about sleep problems. Screens emit a lot of blue light. This can lead to sleep problems later in the evening, which itself can be a reason for dark circles under the eyes. On the other hand, blue light is particularly tiring for the eyes and irritates them more than reddish or yellowish light. It is therefore advisable to try a blue light filter on electronic devices.

Dehydration

Dehydration or a lack of fluids can also cause dark circles under the eyes. In this case it can happen that the skin has a sunken appearance. If this happens in the eye area, the eyes appear sunken and are lower in the eye sockets. This makes dark circles more visible. In addition, when the skin is dehydrated, it is less well supplied with nutrients.

With sunken eyes, you also see more shadows. These are not really dark circles, but they look just like them. So it is advisable to always make sure you drink enough fluids, especially if you sweat a lot. If you are really dehydrated, dark circles are the least of your problems and can lead to serious health complications.

Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid is associated with a slower metabolism. In this case, everything in the body moves a little slower. For example, blood circulation is slower and blood can build up in certain areas. If this happens around the eyes, dark circles can form. In addition, the skin is also less supplied with nutrients here.

Other Symptoms Include Lack of energy and sleep problems, which in itself can be a problem with dark circles. Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed by a blood test (e.g. by determining the TSH level). Symptoms include lack of energy and drive, cold hands and feet, or constipation.

Stress

I have already gone into this point a little in the article about sleep problems. However, lack of sleep is of course not the only reason for stress in life. Increased and chronic stress shows itself, for example, in the increased release of the stress hormone cortisol. Chronically high levels of cortisol are bad for the skin’s protein synthesis and can lead to a lack of collagen. The skin then becomes thinner and underlying blood vessels become visible.
