Westmorland and Furness Council’s health and wellbeing board are respond supporting the government’s propose measures “smoke-free generation” plan. This plan aims to reduce the number of smokers to less than 5% of the population by 2030.

Government proposals to reduce smoking include criminalizing the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. Moreover, they also propose limiting Vape flavors and descriptions so that flavor vapes are no longer targeting at children.

In addition, government plans also include regulating point-of-sale displays in retail stores, keeping vapes out of the sight of children and products that appeal to them. Additionally, they are also considering limiting the sale of disposable vapes. Because there is a rise in vaping among children.

Katrina Stephens, director of public health at Westmorland and Furness Council, previously says smoking remained the biggest cause of premature death in the region.

According to Public Health England, smoking causes 84% of lung cancer deaths and increases the risk of stroke by at least 50%. The government has set a target to make England smoke-free by 2030. This means that by 2030, the smoke population in England will be less than 5%.

For Westmorland and Furness to achieve this target, 10,000 people in the area would have to quit smoking. In the meantime, without anyone else starting to smoke.
