Fig blossom: This is what you should know about the unusual flowers

The fig blossom is not fixed in time, but has a wide scope throughout the year. The exterior of the flowers is also unusual.

Ficus carica, as the fig is also called, is a special feature in botany. The Mediterranean plant, which can also thrive magnificently in mild regions in this country, stands out from other plants, primarily because of its flowers. If you own a fig tree, you may be wondering why it just doesn’t seem to bloom…

This is what the flowers look like

The fig blossom A single fig tree produces a surprising number of flowers. However, at first glance they cannot be recognized as such. Visually they are much more reminiscent of fruit. Many people are therefore unsettled and believe that their fig tree is not blooming at all. You can recognize the fig flowers by the following characteristics:

  • are located in the leaf axils
  • spherical to bottle-shaped shape
  • 3 to 5 centimeters tall
  • green colour
  • not scented
  • Each flower has many small inflorescences
  • at the top there is a small opening with bracts
  • The majority of fig trees have separate sexes
  • there are male and female flowers
  • There are now also self-pollinating figs
  • The fruits develop almost imperceptibly directly from the flowers

flowering time of the plant

Fig trees bloom up to three times a year. This ability also makes the figs something extraordinary. The flowering period is usually between February and September. If you want to find out when it’s blooming, it’s best to examine your fig tree and look for the small, spherical inflorescences that are reminiscent of unripe fruit.

The pollination of the fig flower

Unlike other flowers, the flowers of fig trees are not visible from the outside. They are in secret. This makes them completely uninteresting and inaccessible to bees and other native insects. In the native regions of the fig trees there is an insect that specializes in their pollination. It is the Fig Gall Wasp or fig wasp. It takes over the fertilization, is just 2 to 3 millimeters in size and slips through the small opening into the interior of the flowers. The fig gall wasp lays its eggs there before moving on.

The fig trees that are sold commercially in this country (so-called Adriatic figs) are normally self-pollinating. This means that you do not have to rely on the help of the fig gall wasp for pollination.
