Argentine soccer world champion Alejandro “Papu” Gómez has explained his positive doping test by accidentally ingesting a spoonful of his son’s cough syrup.

Alejandro Gómez The 35-year-old was found to have the Active Ingredient Terbutaline in samples from October 2022 and was banned for two years by the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission. “I have never resorted to a banned practice and will never resort to it,” Gómez said in a statement on Instagram. He categorically rejects any form of doping.

Gómez won the World Cup in Qatar with the Argentine national team at the end of last year. He was the only world champion not to be called up to the national team again this year. After being under contract with Sevilla FC for around two and a half years, he only moved to Monza a few weeks ago.
