Blowflies – how to fight the causes

The pests can transmit diseases and impair hygiene. If you notice a nest, you should remove it as soon as possible.

Blowflies that crawl over bare skin in summer are not only annoying, but also unhygienic. Hence the question: How can you get rid of the pests?

Blowflies can transmit diseases

Actually, the blue blowfly or flesh fly (Calliphora vicina) and its counterpart the gold fly (Lucilia sericata) look handsome with their shiny bodies. But they are not hygienic.

Because flies are attracted to anything that smells unpleasant. Because of this, they can transmit diseases. The insects like to lay their eggs in dung or rubbish. The residues remain on their bodies and are dragged into the House. Regardless of which genus has settled in you, the pests multiply extremely quickly.

If the flies have found a nest in your house or apartment from which the larvae hatch, a plague of flies can quickly develop. You should prevent this by making sure that the insects do not come into your home in the first place. Even a few animals can quickly become a nuisance. The Institute for Pest Research therefore recommends combating it quickly. Because the animals transmit diseases – in particular so-called human pathogens such as salmonella can be passed on.

A fly can only deposit its larvae in your house or apartment if it somehow gets inside. Once you have flies in the house, you often don’t get rid of them so quickly. Make sure the bluebottles stay outside the door.

Prevent entry into the house

Especially in the evening hours there is a risk that flies will come into the house, because they are strongly attracted to the light. Therefore, close the windows before you turn on the light or turn off the light before you ventilate. If you do not want to sleep with the window closed during the summer months, you should attach appropriate insect screens to the window. Every time you open the door, make sure that the pests cannot follow you.

Install fly screens to prevent indoor fly infestation. The grids also keep wasps and other insects out. Fly screens are available for straight windows as well as for windows that are integrated into the sloping roof. You can buy products that are optimized for standard windows, or you can buy bulk goods and adapt them to your windows. You can also get matching fly screens for patio doors , which can be opened and closed from the outside. In this way, effective protection throughout the house is possible.

Proper handling of food and leftovers

Be sure to place garbage cans or compost heaps as far away from the house as possible. In the warm season, the smells strongly attract the flies. A garbage can that is located directly in front of the house entrance or in front of the kitchen window can be a reason for a larger number of flies entering the house or apartment. You often don’t get rid of them that quickly.

In the kitchen , you should not leave fruit and vegetables out in the open or use them up quickly. Juices should also be sealed, as flies like to settle on food. This is unsanitary.

Fly swatter and other fly repellents

If you already have flies in your house, there are a number of ways to combat them.

For example, the use of the fly swatter is recommended . It is inexpensive, but its use often leaves traces – especially when the insects crawl along the wallpaper. Electric, battery-powered fly swatters are cleaner . A light electric current flows in them, which is harmless to humans, but which immediately kills the fly without having to kill it.

Chemical pesticides are effective, but only recommended to a limited extent, especially if you have small children in the house. The fly spray effectively deters the flies and kills the insects quickly, but it puts a strain on the respiratory tract.

Sticky fly traps also help. They are easy to use and do not emit any odours. Since the sight is not very nice, especially in living rooms, they should be replaced once a day.

Our tip
If you have an excessive number of flies in the house, you should find and remove the nest.

Try to remove the nest

Flies don’t build nests. They look for a sheltered room to deposit their larvae, which is dark and has a fairly good temperature. Since blowflies also like strong smells, they like to collect in animal faeces, such as faeces, dung or leftover food – also for laying eggs.

If you notice an excessive infestation of flies in your home, check to see if there are any open foods that have been forgotten. There can also be accumulations of fly larvae in cavities, such as in the basement, behind blinds or high furniture. You can spray out the cavities with fly spray . However, this chemistry leaves odors and kills other insects as well.

Since bluebottles are not very choosy when it comes to depositing their larvae, it is very difficult to locate the nest or depositing site. Be sure to remove leftover food immediately and empty trash cans daily. You should dispose of organic waste immediately and not put it in the trash can in the first place. Especially in summer it is important to avoid the development of odors. Smells attract the bluebottles and invite them to shed their larvae.

Where does the name bluebottle come from?

The bluebottle got its name from its fondness for feces. The word “to throw” means “to defecate”. And the insect likes to lay its eggs on dung, droppings and manure, among other things.

Despite its bad reputation, the bluebottle can also be useful. Their larvae are bred in sterile laboratories and used, for example, in wound healing. Above all, the descendants of Lucilia sericata, i.e. the gold fly, are used for this.

How long do blowflies live?

It takes about four weeks from the time the eggs are laid to the blowfly. How long the finished and fully equipped insects will live depends, among other things, on their environment. In good conditions – i.e. sufficient food, few enemies – they can live up to two months.
