How do I know if someone is losing their sight?

The risk of eye diseases increases with age. This tells outsiders that a person’s eyes are getting worse and worse.

Almost everyone sees worse as they age. But if an eye disease is involved, the vision loss is all the greater. There is a risk of blindness if, for example, glaucoma is not recognized in time and stopped by treatment.

So anyone who cares for elderly people or has anything to do with them in everyday life should know which signs point to a loss of vision. The German Blind and Visually Impaired Association (DBSV) draws attention to this and advises to pay attention to the following things:

1. The outward appearance

If someone suddenly seems more unkempt than usual, that can be a warning sign. Because those who can see less and less may not notice the large stain on their sweater. Or that the pattern of the blouse and trousers don’t match or that the hair isn’t combed properly.

2. Changes in personality

Changes in behavior that initially make one think of depression or dementia can also be caused by a loss of vision.

For example, if someone is suddenly no longer interested in usual activities such as reading, doing crossword puzzles or watching TV – because all of this is becoming increasingly difficult. Also withdrawal or sudden distrust of familiar people are signs.

3. Unsafe movement

Also, if someone walks hesitantly and unsteadily, seeking safety near walls, it can indicate that their eyesight is getting worse.

The same applies if someone avoids walks in the sunshine, for example: Because with many eye diseases, the eyes are particularly sensitive to glare.

4. Lack of eye contact in conversation

Another sign: If the person looks past you during the conversation, i.e. cannot maintain eye contact. And: Those affected often squint their eyes or squint to be able to see things better.

Creeping vision loss: help is here

What to do if you suspect that your father or neighbor can only see poorly? Then it is important that he or she has the eyes examined by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible, according to the DBSV.

But before that there is the big question: How do I address the topic? The DBSV advises to prepare such a conversation well. Because: Expressing the observations directly – that can also backfire and end in conflict. Because the loss of vision also affects those affected themselves, of course, and fear and helplessness are often involved.
