Home Treatments for HS Flares

If you have Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), you are already aware that the inflammatory lesions caused by the disease in friction-prone areas (such as your underarms, bra line, groyne, and anal area) are extremely uncomfortable and, at times, fatal. The pus-filled pimples are capable of spreading, leaking, and even smelling. So, how can you find any solace while they drain and heal? We asked prominent HS experts and people with the skin condition for their best tips on how to reduce pain in everyday life. For some skin-calming suggestions, click on the link.

Let’s take a look at an HS bump first.

A red, furious, pus-filled abscess arises when apocrine sweat glands, which are microscopic glands found at the base of your hair follicles, become inflamed. HS is most common in areas with a lot of friction and sweat—where your skin scrapes against each other. There are three stages, ranging from extremely light to severe. Sinus tracts, which are under-the-skin tunnels that fill with pus and blood when the HS bump ruptures, are more serious occurrences. Although these wounds heal, they might leave you with stiff, unpleasant scar tissue. Here are some effective pain relief strategies.

Modify Things

Yes, the evidence is limited. Anecdotal research suggests that turmeric, which has considerable anti-inflammatory properties, may benefit in the Treatment of HS, which is why many patients with the illness use it orally to help soothe their skin. Curcumin, its active ingredient, is also antimicrobial and antibacterial, which may aid in illness prevention. Dr. Adil suggests taking 1 teaspoon of turmeric in 14 cup of liquid three times a day by mouth (turmeric is also available in pill form). A JAMA study found that approximately 60% of HS patients used turmeric as a complementary alternative medicine (CAM) treatment.

Remove the Bleach!

A bleach bath may sound scary, but it is a doctor-recommended treatment for decreasing the bacterial load on your skin, preventing infection and subsequent breakouts, and eradicating the stench commonly associated with HS lesions. Consult your doctor first, but the typical guideline is to pour 14 cup of bleach into a full bath of water and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. “Think of it as a homemade swimming pool,” recommends Dr. Adil. Avoid this therapy if you have open wounds since it may cause burning and stinging.

Change from hot to chilly.

According to Dr. Adil, using warm compresses on your HS abscesses, comparable to pulling a zit to the surface, would help them drain faster. And the faster they drain, the faster they disappear. Cold therapy can also be therapeutic, and it works much better when combined with heat. “Ice packs can help reduce pain and swelling,” said Dr. Adil. “Alternating between hot and cold may help with a lesion that isn’t draining and may help manage pain.” Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes first to encourage drainage. Then, to alleviate pain, apply a cold pack.

Stay away from the cocktail.

Alcohol can exacerbate HS flares. Ms.Blake, an HS patient, has moderate HS flares that go much worse when she drinks alcohol. “I had to go to the ER many times to have the abscesses lanced [when a physician makes an incision to promote drainage], but I haven’t needed intervention since I got sober nearly 10 years ago,” she says.

Change over to cotton.

During flares, Pinnell dressed in light, cotton attire. Because HS bumps are easily irritated and worsened by friction, avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing in outbreak regions. Cotton is gentle on the skin and allows it to breathe. When it comes to pants, comfort is very vital. Look for soft cotton knickers and bras free of tight elastic and underwear, which can put pressure on HS lumps and cause pain.

Tea Spilled

Another method for providing warmth and relief to a painful lump is to use a hot tea bag. Bring water to a boil and steep a tea bag for about a minute. Then, press the heated tea bag against the HS bump for at least 10 minutes. The heat encourages drainage, and tea has anti-inflammatory properties. Simple black or green tea will do. Anything potentially offensive, such as cinnamon or spicy drinks, should be avoided.

Purchase a Body Pillow

Sleeping might be tough when you have HS. The agony is enough to keep you awake at night, and if you sleep on your side, the rubbing of your thighs may aggravate the situation and increase the likelihood of new outbreaks. Sleeping with a body pillow—or simply a regular pillow—between your thighs can help reduce friction and pain, allowing you to sleep even if you’re in a flare.

Use some Vick’s

Your mother’s chest cold remedy may provide some relief from painful HS bumps. “Many patients have reported that Vick’s VapoRub with menthol and camphor can be soothing,” Dr Adil says. Furthermore, the eucalyptus aroma can hide any stink associated with HS pimples. Avoid applying the ointment to open wounds. It could sting or burn you.

Make use of herbal disinfectants.

Because some herbs contain Thymol, they can be used to manufacture disinfectants. Many culinary herbs, including thyme, oregano, and sage, contain this component. They have been employed as antiseptic agents for thousands of years in Roman, Greek, and Indian medicine.

The use of neem soap, which is widely available, is quite beneficial.

Hydradenitis suppurativa is a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha, according to Ayurveda. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down. Because of the disturbance of fat molecules, they begin to accumulate in muscles and obstruct physiological passages, resulting in painful, swelling sores in the groin, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.
